Voting is vital guest speaker asserts

"If every Negro in the South voted, discrimination would become almost impossible," said Mrs. Sarah Patton Boyle, the guest speaker a for the mass meeting held yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock in the chapel of East End Baptist Church and sponsored by the Independent Voters League.

Mrs. Boyle, a professional writer who is now giving her support to the struggle of minority groups for full citizenship, when on to say that Negroes should help themselves by becoming politically strong.

In a short business meeting that preceded the main address by Mrs. Boyle, reports were heard from the Nansemond Educational Committee headed by Mrs. Ruby Walden , and Moses Riddick, executive secretary of the Independent Voters League. Riddick mentioned in his report the significance of the impending County Bond Election and its underlying purpose of maintaining segregation in the schools.

Mrs. Walden summarized the work of the Equalization Suit filed several years ago. She mentioned that many of the claims filed at that time have been met by the County School Board but still many conditions remain unsatisfactory. Better bus transportation, central heating and installation of running water were some of the needs cited. Mrs. Walden also suggested that the object now would be integration instead of equalization since the Supreme Court's decision came into effect since the legal proceedings were in force.

Following these reports the assembled delegates voted to draw up a resolution to change the purpose of the Nansemond Educational Committee to integration and to follow through with a suit for integration in September.

Rev. Ronnie Skeeter was mater of ceremonies. Rev. C.J. Word gave the response to the address by Mrs. Boyle. Mrs. Fanny Davis, ex-president of the Suffolk Chapter of the Negro Council of Negro Women, introduced Mrs. Boyle. Remarks were given by S.A. Estes. Welcome remarks were given by John T. Riddick.
