Byrd denies he advocated shutting down Va. schools

Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. has told a Norfolk audience that "I don't think I ever advocated the closing of public schools."

Byrd made his comment in response to a question at a meeting of the Norfolk Young Democrats. He was asked if he thought the closing of public schools in 1958 during the state's massive resistance to school desegregation was "best for the Commonwealth."

The question was raised in reference to attacks by Armistead L. Boothe, Byrd's primary opponent, on Byrd's role as a state legislator in advocating for massive resistance.

"I don't think I ever advocated for the closing of public schools," Byrd said. "That was not the purpose of legislation to which you refer. That issue is a dead one at present."

More county 4-H boys honored

Two more Nansemond County youths have won recognition during state 4-H Club activities at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, during the past week.

Tommy Rountree placed fourth in the livestock division and Fred E. Byrd Jr. won first place in the tractor-driving competition. Their honors followed closely that of another Nansemond County team member, Steve Britt, who had won the Virginia 4-H Sheep Achievement Award.

Joshua Pretlow of Everets Bridge, an attorney in Suffolk, has been named campaign manager in Nansemond County for Rep. Watkins Abbitt of Appomattox, who is making a bid for reelection from the 4th District.

Pretlow has chosen a committee of 43 prominent Nansemond County citizens to work with him on Abbitt's behalf.

Included are four members of the Board of Supervisors, Chairman Jarvis Howell, A.L. Glasscock, Lester K. Mansfield and Joseph A. Savage.

Among others on the committee are Sheriff James C. Knight Jr., Treasurer W.O. Jones, Commonwealth's Attorney William Wellington Jones, Commissioner of Revenue Willie Rountree, Circuit Court Clerk John Henry Powell and County Court Clerk L.P. Waldo Jr.

Yanks blank Wilroy, 16-0; Bethlehem defeats pirates

One of Suffolk's two teams in the Suffolk-Nansemond Junior Baseball League scored a 16-0 shutout in opening night play at Peanut Park. The other local entry was beaten.

After the Suffolk Yankees had walloped Wilroy in the first game, Bethlehem nosed out the Suffolk Yankees in a well-played nightcap, 4-3.

Bethlehem's Sandy Winslow, a rising sophomore at Forest Glen High School, pitched a no-hitter for 6 2/3 innings against the Pirates. After the first two Pirates had struck out in the seventh, Harrell, stocky catcher, poked a clean single to center to spoil Winslow's no-hit bid.

...At that, Bethlehem had to come from behind with a three-run rally in the sixth to win singles by Larry Lewis and Ronald Robertson.

In the opening game, Suffolk's Tommy Harry limited Wilroy to three hits in posting his shutout. The Yankees got 10 hits off three Wilroy pitchers and 13 bases on balls and frequent Wilroy errors helped pile it on.

Doug Boyce, Ken Rittner and Donnie Babb all had two hits apiece for the Yankees.

Babb, Rittner and Ray Soule each scored three times.
