Twenty-two graduates earn SEF scholarships

The Suffolk Education Foundation recently announced the recipients of its 2004 college scholarships.

This year, the Foundation awarded $16,000 to help 22 local high school graduates continue their education.

Since 1993, the Foundation has committed $127,000 in college scholarships for local high school students.

The two recipients of the third annual Jean and Harry L. Cross, Jr. Endowment Scholarship are Michael McCarthy of Nansemond River High School and Heather E. Perry of Lakeland High School.

McCarthy plans to study psychology at the University of Virginia to prepare for a career as a psychologist.

Perry plans to study printmaking or graphic design at San Francisco Art Institute or Emily Carr Institute of Design and is planning a career in the fashion industry.

The two recipients of the sixth annual Helen and Ned Ferguson Endowment Scholarship are Duane Rollins of Nansemond River High School and Megan Stripling of Lakeland High School. Rollins plans to attend North Carolina State University to pursue a career as a mechanical engineer.

Stripling plans to study elementary education at Lancaster Bible college, working toward a career as an elementary school teacher.

This year, the $500 award of the Elgin Lowe Endowment Scholarship will be given to Kelly Holcomb of Nansemond River High School.The $500 award of the Joseph Barlow Endowment Scholarship will be given to Wendy Najacque of Lakeland High School.

Several years ago, Laura Morris, a faculty member at Lakeland High School passed away after fighting cancer. The family of this well-loved mathematics teacher established the Laura Lee Owens Morris Memorial Scholarship.

This year's $500 scholarship was awarded to Chase Nelson, who plans to study engineering at the University of Virginia.

The 2003 Lakeland Faculty Memorial Scholarships awarded $500 each to Michael Johnfinn, Sanese White and Jennifer Potts.

Other $1,000 scholarship recipients from Lakeland High School are Avery Daugherty, who received the Electronic Systems Excellence Scholarship, and plans to pursue a career as a political analyst and has been accepted at Virginia Tech ... Sean Harris, who received the Physical Therapy Works Excellence Scholarship, plans on a career in law and will be attending Old Dominion University.

Other $1,000 scholarship recipients from Nansemond River High School are Gabriella Ferraioli received the Suffolk Education Foundation's Electronic Systems Excellence Scholarship.

She plans to pursue a career in medicine and will attend the University of Virginia and Ryan Richardson, who received the Suffolk Education Foundation's Rodriguez Ripley Maddux Motley Excellence Scholarship.

He plans to pursue a career in mechanical engineering and will attend Virginia Tech.

Rashaan Sawyer of Nansemond River High School received the $500 Duke Automotive Excellence Award. He plans to attend Paul D. Camp Community College and study computer science and programming.

Additional awards made at Nansemond River High School include:

Sean Riley, who plans a career in either government and politics or computers and engineering and will attend Virginia Tech.

Tiffany Darden, who plans a career in nursing and will attend Old Dominion University

Latonia Gardner, who will attend Norfolk State University or Paul D. Camp Community College and pursue a career as a surgical technician

Shani Brumley, who plans a career as a dermatologist and will attend Hampton University

Katie Stewart, who will attend Old Dominion University and pursue a career as a pharmacist.

Additional awards presented at Lakeland High School include:

Sachiko R. Cline, who will attend Virginia Commonwealth University and pursue a career as a special education teacher

Michelle R. Holsinger, who will attend Randolph-Macon College and plans a career as emergency room physician.
