New York strike may spread to nation
NEW YORK (AP) - A nationwide walkout of building service workers and strikes by workers in other New York labor fields threatened today as disputants in New York's service strike, flatly declaring they would make no concession, entered conciliation conferences.
Warned by Mayor LaGuardia that they must reach an agreement today to end the four-day old strike of elevator operators and other building employees, union heads and spokesmen for realty interests tossed arguments back and forth.
Card club is entertained at Simons home
Miss Martha Brothers and Miss Virginia Riddick entertained the members of their card club at a lovely party last night in the home of Mrs. William Simons in the Collingswood Apartment.
The rooms were attractively decorated with spring flowers. Bridge was played at four tables and prizes were won by Mrs. Herbert Morrison and Miss Jennie Hurt. Miss Marion Virginia Bradshaw, whose marriage to Wallace Lyon will take place this spring, was presented with a gift.
After the games, a salad course was served by the hostesses, assisted by Mrs. E.J. Riddick.
Iris Art Circle meets
Mrs. Junious White was hostess to the Iris Art Circle last Wednesday evening. The president presented the quilt all ready for work. Each member worked insidiously in quilting the floral-designed blocks which were very pretty. Afterwards cakes, ices and punches were served.
Cards were enjoyed by guests who were Misses Claudine Jackson, Allie Jordan, Pearl Jackson, Mrs. Othella Lundy, Mrs. R. Allen, Mrs. Maugueritte Farsville, Leon Colden, W.R. Wright and Bernyce White.
Elon College Alumni Club banquet
The Elon College Alumni Club of Eastern Virginia held its annual banquet last night in the fellowship hall of Suffolk Christian Church. The president of the club, Dr. Darden Jones of Franklin, presided. The hall was lovely with cut flowers and lighted candles, carrying out the color scheme of maroon and gold, the college's colors. On the tables were silver baskets of flowers and gold candles in silver holders. Guests were received by Mr. and Mrs. Russell Bradford, Dr. Darden Jones, Miss Mary Rawles Jones, Dr. and Mrs. J.E. Rawles, and the Rev. and Mrs. H. S. Hardcastle.
F.L. Campopiano guest at dinner
F.L. Campopiano, manager of the Montgomery Ward store in Suffolk, who has been ordered to Middlesboro, Ky., to take charge of the Wards store in that city, was guest of honor at a dinner Thursday night at the Planters Club, given by employees of the stores. Covers were laid for 21.
