Public invited to monument dedication

Published Friday, May 28, 2004

On Saturday, May 29, Civil War Confederate Brigadier General Laurence Simmons Baker will be recognized during a special ceremony at Suffolk Seaboard Railroad Museum and Cedar Hill Cemetery. Sons of Confederate Veterans, Tom Smith Camp 1702, erected a monument last week to the general. It sits beside a pyramid of cannonballs, hand cast by Lee Hart, a past commander of Tom Smith Camp 1702. The public is invited to attend the events, free of charge. The ceremonies begin at 2 p.m., with the dedication of Gen. Baker's portrait at Cedar Hill Cemetery. For more information, contact the Suffolk Division of Tourism at 923-3880.
