Nansemond-Suffolk Academy's girls volleyball team used a 13-0 run in the first game to turn the momentum and earn the victory over Cape Henry Thursday evening at NSA. (25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 25-16)
Trailing 16-8 in the first game, a 13-0 run turned the deficit into a 21-16 NSA lead.
The dramatic run was spurred on largely by seven aces from Kristen Nuckles.
The Lady Saints continued to play well through the second game.
They held the lead throughout and won eight of the last 11 points to stretch their lead to a comfortable margin.
A well-balanced attack became the story as six different Lady Saints recorded kills during the second game.
After losing a close third game, the Saints rallied back to take a 10-6 lead early in the fourth game.
The Dolphins responded and took a brief lead at 11-10.
NSA took the lead for good on three consecutive aces by Ellen Giermak which made the score 16-13.
"We're turning the corner every night, "said head coach Shane Foster. "Tonight we had a bit more confidence...the team is coming together more each time."
Nuckles lead the Lady Saints with 12 kills, 11 digs and eight aces. Parris Grieder led the team in assists with 14, as well as adding 10 kills.
The NSA boys grabbed their first victory of the season, beating Catholic 18-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-13. Bryan Kitz had six kills and Matt Hamlet seven assists.
Both teams play Greenbrier Christian on Tuesday, with the girls staying in Suffolk and the boys heading to Chesapeake.
The public schools weren't as lucky, as both Lakeland and Nansemond River's teams fell, to Western Branch and Deep Creek, and the King's Fork girls lost to Indian River.
King's Fork hosts Lakeland on Tuesday, while the Warriors host Lakeland on Thursday.
