Women's work is lecture topic
On March 9, Dr. Kathleen Carter of Paul D. Camp Community College's Adjunct Faculty will present a lecture on "Women's Work in the 19th Century: The Impact of Technology and Education." The lecture will be held at Riddick's Folly from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and is sponsored by the Association of American University Women and Riddick's Folly, Inc. Admission is free and people should bring their own brown bag lunches.
Sisisky: Representing 'a mixed bag of cities and counties'
The relationship between city government officials and their representatives in Congress is often the difference between whether that city can accomplish anything on the federal level. Community development grants, bills with local impact, federal highways and public housing are all of great interest to us in Suffolk. And our U. S. Representative often provides the grease necessary to keep the federal gears turning in our favor.
Suffolk enjoys a special relationship with Congressman Norman J. Sisisky, a Democrat from Petersburg who represents the area. Congressman Sisisky, in his first term, has shown us that he understands our concerns and can be an effective legislator.
In a recent interview with our Fourth District representative, we talked about his relationship with Suffolk.
SCS girls win title
It took some doing, but Suffolk Christian School's girls' basketball team rallied in the second half to defeat Azalea Gardens Christian here Friday night and win the Eastern Christian Conference championship.
The Suffolk boys had considerably less trouble against their Azalea counterparts, breezing to a 57-26 triumph. The two games were scheduled to be played at Azalea but Azalea has no playing facilities.
If the Azalea girls had won, there would have been a three-way tie for first between Azalea, Suffolk Christian and Portsmouth Christian. Since the Suffolk girls won, they'll go into next week's tournament as the No. 1 seed.
Ten-mile race scheduled for March 3
The Tidewater Striders, in conjunction with the Department of Parks and Recreation, will hold the Surprising Suffolk Ten-Mile race Saturday, March 3, at Lone Star Lakes Park.
Awards will be presented to the top three men and women finishing the race as well as first, second and third places finishes in each age category. Age groups will be bracketed as follows: men-19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, and 45 and over.
The pre-entry fee is $6 and will include a t-shirt.
