School Board okays JFK reorganization

The Suffolk School Board last night unanimously approved a plan to reorganize John F. Kennedy High School into upper and lower schools next year, and at the same time tabled for further consideration a committee recommendation to institute nine-week "mini-courses" on a trial basis in two city schools.

The Kennedy reorganization, which was presented to the board at its last meeting, was recommended after study by the curriculum committee.

However, since it would call for the employment of four new administrators and seven other staff members, the implementation of it will depend upon funding of the School Board budget by City Council.

Packers may qualify as 'Cinderella' Team

Hey, maybe we've got a "Cinderella" team in the Peanut District Group AA basketball tournament, after all.

That is, if a team which finished the regular season tied for sixth at 8-12 qualifies as a Cinderella.

Cinderella or not, Smithfield certainly turned in a mild upset last night at Tidewater Community College with its first round 52-49 overtime victory over third seeded (16-4) Forest Glen.

Southside wins basketball title

Southside has claimed the championship in the Men's Church Basketball League.

Going into last night's games, Southside was tied with Methodist for the league lead. Southside came out with a 75-65 victory over Whaleyville, but Methodist dropped a 58-56 decision to Hillcrest.

Since it was the final game for both Southside and Methodist, the title went to Southside.

The league's last two games will be played tonight at Forest Glen. Holland and Christian meet 7 p.m. opener in the First Baptist and East End clash in the nightcap.

Duckpin bowling league standings shuffled

Cobb's Truck Stop, at the top of the local duckpin bowling league, suffered a shutout at the hands of Kimberly's Exxon and fell to third. Exxon moved up to second and Planter's to first after a shutout of Team No. 2. Brewer Jewelry blanked the Moose to get up to fourth.

Heart fund is extended

The Suffolk Heart Fund has extended its heart campaign to Sunday, Feb. 29, due to bad weather last Sunday and sickness in the area.

Workers are encouraged to work on their streets and turn in their packages to Shirley Bryant, residential chairman.

Heart campaign workers also encourage the public to support the chow mien sale being put on by the Kiwanis Club tomorrow from 2 to 6 p.m. at Suffolk Gas Co. Proceeds go to the Heart Fund.
