Sex offender pleads guilty

Published Thursday, June 30, 2005

A 42-year-old man accused of fondling a teenage girl entered guilty pleas Wednesday in Suffolk Circuit Court.

Edward Havens Jr., 42, of 3800 Pughsville Road pleaded guilty to one count each of aggravated sexual battery with a juvenile between the ages of 13 and 15, indecent liberties in a supervisory relationship and carnal knowledge.

As part of a plea agreement, the court dropped three sexual battery, three indecent liberties and two carnal knowledge charges.

Havens was arrested in February after he partially admitted to sexually abusing the 14-year-old to the girl's mother during a telephone sting operation organized by police, said Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Marie Walls.

But Havens, in later interviews with detectives, denied inappropriately touching the girl, Walls said.

"(She) was scared of him," Walls said. "(She) was scared to tell anyone about it."

Havens will remain in Western Tidewater Regional Jail until his Sept. 15 sentencing.

Circuit Court Judge Westbrook Parker ordered Havens not to have any future contact with the juvenile and to pay for any counseling she may need. He also ordered that Havens remain on supervised probation for 35 years after his release from prison.
