Joanna Bailey

Joanna Bailey, 89, of the 600 block of First Avenue, Suffolk, died May 26, 2005 in Obici Hospital. She was a native of Nansemond County and daughter of the late Sonny and Ella Daughtry. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Daughtry.

She retired from the Butter Dish Basket Factory in 1996 after 43 years of service. She was also self-employed in the candy business. She was a member of Missouri Baptist Church, where she was president of the senior usher ministry, member of the missionary ministry and pastor's aid ministry.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 43 years, Ben Bailey of Suffolk; daughters, Virginia Williams of Newark, N.J., Ella Collins and her husband, Theo, of Suffolk, and Brenda Johnson and her husband, Edmond, of Richmond; adopted daughter, Bernadette Bailey of Suffolk; sons, Williams Henry Phillips, Gary Donnie Phillips and wife, Sandra, of New Rochelle, N.Y., and William Dexter High Jr. and his wife, Diana, of Suffolk; stepdaughters, Louise Baker-Collins, Jenny Mae Yancey and Mary Ann Bailey; a sister, Everlina Williams of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, John Daughtry of Spring Gardens, N.Y.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at Missouri Baptist Church, 2020 Lake Cohoon Road, by the Rev. Ronnie Boone. The family will receive friends at Crocker Funeral Home from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and will be at 603 Kinsey Lane, Suffolk.
