Two speakers heard here

at Memorial Day rites

The Memorial Day weekend had its share of fun, relaxation, ceremonies and tragedy. Memorial Day, itself, saw a luncheon in Suffolk and afternoon programs in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Frank Mesite Jr. opened the 3 p.m. cemetery program as he directed the Suffolk High School Band in a musical prelude.

Jack R. Shryer called the program to order. Shryer is general chairman of the veterans committee, and did much of the work of putting together the memorial program.

The Rev. Robert B. Marr had a busy day of it. He had invocations at the luncheon, the United Veterans program, and United Veterans program, and the Teen-Dem Club's service.

Salvation Army Major Helen Padgett gave the benediction.

Business, Industry urged

to return questionnaires

A reminder to area businesses and industries was issued today by Forrest S. Wommack, executive secretary to the Nansemond-Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, to mail the completed questionnaires in the community college survey.

To determine employment needs, training needs and expected local support for a community college, the questionnaires were distributed to businesses and industries in four counties and two cities in southeastern Virginia.

The questionnaires, when completed, are to be mailed directly to the Arlington office of the firm employed by the state to make such surveys for the purpose of determining locations for local community colleges. The questionnaires were distributed by the Chamber of Commerce for the Suffolk and Nansemond area.

Wommack said today that since the questionnaires would not be mailed to his office he had no idea how many had been completed and returned to Arlington. He added that he hoped the questionnaires would be mailed back promptly, since community response might weigh heavily in any future decision concerning a community college.

Opposition to northern by-pass route slight

This morning's public hearing on the proposed Suffolk by-pass drew a good-size crowd but little opposition to the general route. Some Magnolia businessmen feared if they were by-passed, they would lose life investments.

One, Shelby Parks said, "Magnolia business people don't want to be by-passed. It will hurt business, tax dollars will be lost, and trucks will miss the weighing scales."

Parks proposed the by-pass starting at Wilroy Road. "This would save money for the state and tax payers. It's easily to move homes than business establishments."

Major James F. Hope, Nansemond Executive Secretary G. M. Cornel, and Chamber of Commerce President Thomas J. O'Conner each spoke in favor of the by-pass, but expressed no concern as to its exact location.

As a result, only second-seeded Steve Hughes survives among the four ranked entries and and he's in the finals against Randolph Davis, and unseeded player who yesterday knocked out Steve's brother, Glenn, in semifinals action.
