Only few tickets left

Only a few tickets remain available for Friday night’s concert by the Pickard Chorale and about 100 passes are left for the Saturday evening performance.

Tickets may be reserved by calling Hiram O. Ward, the group’s business manager.

The chorale has been busy practicing for weeks for this their seventh annual Christmas concert to begin each night at 8:15 in the Suffolk High School auditorium.

This year’s concert will open with a medley from “That’s Entertainment” and songs will range from standard concert pieces through top ten tunes, rhythm and blues, during the first half.

The second half of the show will consist of seasonal songs, sacred and secular and accompaniments by keyboards, string bass, percussion, woodwind and brass.

The Main Street Bell Ringers will also be on hand, directed by Nelson Linaburg, and the Chorale Kids will be an additional feature each night.

Chorale director Marvin Pickard said this morning the proceeds from the concerts will be used to provide music scholarships for local students, to assist the local rescue squad, and to subsidize student tickets to an opera sponsored by the recreation department in March.

Minister speaks to Credit Women

The Rev. Richard Bailey, minister of music and education at the First Baptist Church, spoke before members of the Credit Women International at its November breakfast meeting at Bunny’s Restaurant.

It was announced that the Christmas meeting will also be held at Bunny’s at 7 p.m. on Dec. 12.

Mrs. Frances Hatfield presided at the meeting and the invocation was given by Mrs. Margaret Smith, chaplain.

Godfrey W. Stancill, editor and publisher of the Suffolk News-Herald, was guest boss at the meeting.

Mrs. Mildred Hampton reported on the finance committee saying the dish cloths are being sold by members and that a jewelry party was recently held.

Cathy Baker, of “Hee Haw” fame, who is Virginia’s 1978 Honorary Christmas Seal Campaign Chairman, will visit the area on Wednesday, Dec. 6.

Miss Baker will be in Suffolk to speak to board members and friends of the Southern Region, VLA.

She will also visit the Guardian Care Nursing Home as a tribute to the Pilot Club of Suffolk, Inc. which has worked with the Va. Lung Association, Southern Region by mailing out the monthly newsletter.

The Pilot Club also sponsored the Walk-A-Thon with the VLA, Oct. 28.

Twenty-three young folks from throughout the Suffolk schools walkd 10 kilometers, netting so much per kilometer for the Lung Association.

Mrs. Anne Woodward is president of the Southern Region, VLA.

Local Demo leaders size up their party

Cold weather has failed to chill members of the Suffolk Democratic Party and their opinions on reorganizing the state party.

Conversations with local party officers and elected officials suggest a number of measures, with the two dominate issues being strong leadership and an acceptable image.

With those issues under control, most local party officials claim the state organization could again measure up to the political success they enjoy.

“The Democratic Party in Suffolk has been very strongly organized,” Del. J. Samuel Glasscock said.

“Obviously we need to have more activity than in the past, but on the whole the party here has been a good force.”

The last time a Republican challenged a Democrat for the local House of Delegates seat was in 1972, before district realignments and the area was represented by two delegates.

“Obviously things are not going to remain as they were and the Republicans have been able to find their nitch,” Glasscock said.

“When you look at the state level in politics three-fourths of the Assembly is made up of Democrats, yet we still have problems electing a statewide official candidate.”
