Police arrest one in shooting

Published Thursday, November 20, 2008

The Suffolk Police Department has charged a 21-year-old Portsmouth man with a Sept. 14 shooting in which the victim was shot three times in the leg while attempting to buy marijuana.

Patrick K. Harris, of Townpoint Road in Portsmouth, was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of aggravated assault, one count of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, one count of attempted robbery and one count of cutting, stabbing or wounding.

He is being held without bond at Western Tidewater Regional Jail.

On Sept. 14, police were called to the 4000 block of Belleharbour Circle in reference to a shooting. The victim told police he had been visiting friends in an apartment complex, when several people tried to pull him into a vehicle and then robbed and shot him.

During his investigation, Detective John McCarley learned that the victim had arranged to meet the suspects at the apartments to purchase marijuana and that he got into the vehicle voluntarily, according to a city press release. Once the victim was inside the vehicle, police said, events took place that caused him to flee. He was shot after he got out of the vehicle.
