Counting on Suffolk voters
Published Saturday, October 25, 2008
Don’t think for one second that the voters of Suffolk aren’t important to national politics. Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden’s visit yesterday to Nansemond River High School and the work done by both political parties to raise the exposure of their candidates across the city confirm that Suffolk is, indeed, on the political map — even for the presidency.
Close presidential elections in 2000 and 2004 reinforced the truth of the old adage that every vote counts. The candidates seeking the highest office in the land realize that fact better than anyone. With polls fluctuating every day, it is still conceivable that this race remains anyone’s election.
Biden’s visit is the first time a candidate on the presidential ticket has come to town since 1964, when Democratic presidential candidate Lyndon B. Johnson stumped in Suffolk.
“And he won,” Suffolk Democratic Committee Chairman Art Bredemeyer pointed out this week. “The state has gone Republican since then. Maybe that is behind the strategy in coming to Suffolk.”
Whatever the reason for Biden’s visit, every vote does, in fact, count. And to some, Suffolk’s votes mean just a little more.

Obama and Biden will cut military defesne funding Obama is not a proponet of the miliatary. Since North Suffolk and the Tidewater area is very dependent on the military and defense contractors. When those cuts come what has the mayor and others got to say and what do they have planned to replace that tax revenue? Shipyards will take a big hit. So raise the citizens taxes even more? Sorry folks, but if Obama and Biden want to increase taxes on the oil companies and cut capital gains taxes, Stop and think of the commercials on TV regarding alternative energy soucres. The majority of those companies are involved in finding other sources, where is that capital suppose to come from? If Suffolk really wants to count, then vote NO to Obama and Biden. Based on the economy the way it is at this moment the city is already in trouble. The city and its citizens need to stand for what is best for them and their future in the city and for the city inwhich they live. Not for socialism and wealth being spread around to appease a socialist ticket. If you dont have a job due to cutbacks your taxes are still due and the tax cuts they speak of isnt going to help you one bit. Could you be on the verge of losing your home? Your car etc etc. Think wisely how you use your vote. Her higness and her troops will be there to see that they take your property so they can get THEIRS...
