U.S. voters should know the issues

Published Saturday, October 25, 2008

With only a few days remaining until one of the biggest elections in history, the passion of supporters on both sides of the political divide seems to exceed that of any election in recent memory. Political volunteers are canvassing Suffolk’s neighborhoods like never before, and voters are hoping that whatever happens on Election Day, the economy will revert back to the good ol’ days.

I’d like to think at this stage that most people are well informed about the candidates in races from the School Board all the way up to the presidential level. But I’m not confident that’s the case.

In fact, radio shock-jock Howard Stern, who is perhaps better known for his occasionally obscene on-air antics, set out recently to find out whether people vote on the basis of appearance, notoriety or allegiance to a party, rather than aligning themselves with a candidate’s platforms and stands on the issues.

Stern sent a reporter to Harlem to gauge who would get its residents’ support in the presidential election. The reporter asked random people on the streets whom they were voting for, and almost all those asked quickly responded that Obama was their man.

But then the reporter decided to see how much these potential voters knew about their candidate. “So do you support Obama and his pro-life stance?” he asked. “Oh yeah, we do,” the interviewees answered. The reporter continued the questions. “So are you glad that Obama chose Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential nominee?” the reporter asked. “Oh yeah, we love Sarah, Go Obama!”

The questions went on and on, but you get the point. People who were asked had no clue what the issues were. Instead, they were 100 percent convinced that Obama was their man based on his appearance and perhaps due to race or allegiance to the Democratic Party. Whatever the case may be, it proved that one can garner support by reasons other than what he claims to do once in office.

It reminds me of the movie “The Distinguished Gentleman,” starring Eddie Murphy. Murphy had the same name as a former state legislator and decided to run for office on name recognition alone. Murphy made no public appearances, but because his name was well recognized, he received enough votes to win the election. That may be extreme, but one moral is that you don’t need the best plans to win office, rather the best campaign.

To be fair, let’s not leave out Sen. John McCain’s Republican party. I’m sure Sarah Palin will win the McCain/Palin ticket some votes solely because she is a woman and a small-town girl. Right or wrong, that is how politics works.

Let’s hope that Suffolk voters are more politically aware than the ones Stern featured. A city needs a leader who can lead and has the understanding to get things done in office. The same is true for our country. Voting for a person because of color, fame and the like just spells trouble.

More information on Obama supporter Charlie Rangle another politicain fleecing America. Guess he figured that he needed more of that wealth redistribution.

Blowing Off The Rangel Investigation
Did any of us really believe Democrats would be interested in investigating this?
An attorney for House Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel (N.Y.) acknowledged Monday that more than six weeks after the senior Democrat announced he would hire a forensic auditor to scour his tax and financial records, he has yet to do so, saying an extensive review process has delayed any action…
Rangel is also under scrutiny by the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, which voted in late September to establish an investigative subcommittee into a multitude of alleged rules violations by the senior lawmaker.
The panel’s investigation will examine Rangel’s ownership of a Dominican Republic villa — the lawmaker has admitted he failed to report rental income, the nexus of his tax troubles — as well as his use of House parking facilities for long-term vehicle storage, fundraising efforts on behalf of a City College of New York center bearing his name, and the lawmaker’s use of multiple rent-controlled apartments as his primary residence…
However, it remains unclear when the ethics panel would resume consideration of the matter if the report is not completed before that time. The committee would be required to initiate a new investigation at the start of the next Congress.
C'mon now. We never thought this would be taken seriously by the most ethical congress in our nation's history….The liberals were going to drain the swamp rember that B.S?

Havent the GOP voters realized that investigating Charlie "mother of all tax hikes" Rangel or William "icebox" Jefferson would be considered a "lynching" because of their skin color?
They were merely participating in a little wealth being redistributed in their direction. If it were a repug, he would already be in jail.

Obama and Biden telling us all that this country is in trouble turmoil and it SUCKS. Care to ask the Messiah where he made his millions. Ask Hillary the same question. In the last 8 years you think. Meantime Plugs Biden wants you to spread the wealth to others but he contributed only 3 thousand to charity over the last 5 years. funny how he wants to keep his, but wants yours. Taxpayers are the backbone of this spinless idiot, we pay for his commuter fare of over 1,157.00 a week to travel back and forth from his mansion to D.C. That would be around what 60 grand, he isnt paying for it. You are. Come on folks lets be more patrotic so Joe can live better than the people he represents and Obambi represents. You ever seen a third world leader or dictator riding around in nothing but a Caddy or Benz, while you and your Americacn made car is falling apart and you are paying over 3 a gallon but you are paying his for him? That is why politicans dont give a crap abt your problems They are the chosen ones and they want you to know that and give to them.Obama openly states he is the One. In the history of American politics this man belives in his own hubris and the media gave birth to this virgin politican.
Meantime let me grab my Bible and my gun. and pray that Obama goes down in defeat. if it happens let me remind you there are several negroe spirtuals I can sing in praise and in closing say "Thank You Jesus, if not how about these famous words, ** America. If Obama does win, then the country is what Rev?Wright wants. meantime he deserts the black community and moves into a white gated community to retire.
