Suffolk’s Bleiler knocked out in state senior quarters

Virginia Beach’s Greg Thomas defeated Suffolk’s Bobby Bleiler 7 and 5 in the quarterfinals of the VSGA (Virginia State Golf Association) Senior Amateur Championship on Thursday morning at Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach.

Bleiler, ranked No. 22 in the tournament after the 36-hole stroke play portion of the Championship, defeated two higher-ranked opponents in the first two rounds. Thomas, ranked No. 3, led by two holes after six holes on Thursday and won four straight holes, holes 7-10, to get a big lead in the match.

Stan Fischer of Richmond, Mike McDonald of Williamsburg and George Owens of Virginia Beach were the three semifinals along with Thomas. Thomas and McDonald won their semifinal matches on Thursday afternoon.

The final match of the VSGA Senior Amateur Championship is set to be played Friday morning at Princess Anne Country Club.
