Officials find pig Friday

Pretty as a pig: City officials are trying to find where this pig, found roaming around the East Washington community Friday morning, calls home.

Call him Wilbur, Babe or Napoleon, just as long as you call him home.

The Suffolk Animal Control is looking for the owner of a wandering pig that was found in Liberty Street, in the East Washington community, early Friday morning.

“We’re not sure how it got to where it got to,” said Debbie George, city spokesperson. George added that this part of the city is not an area pigs are known to frequent.

Police officers and Animal Control workers were notified of the pig after a concerned resident called emergency services. They worked together to capture the animal, and it has been staying in the Suffolk Animal Shelter.

Now Suffolk Animal Control is looking for help in identifying the pig’s owner.

While many people do own farm animals as pets within the city, it would be illegal for people in the East Washington community to do so.

“It could certainly be someone’s pet, but you are prohibited from keeping livestock in a residential area,” George said.

George said animal control officers do not have any idea how long the pig has been left alone, or even where he might have come from.

“We won’t know that until we’ve identified him,” she said.

Anyone that may know who the pig belongs to is asked to contact Suffolk Animal Control at 514-7855 or Emergency Communications at 923-2350.

If it is illegal to own a pig in that area of E. Washington, do you really expect the "owner" to step forward to claim it?
