SNH should do teen pregnancy follow-up
Published Saturday, August 29, 2009
Thank you for glorifying teen pregnancy in the story “Sisters, mothers, aunts” in Thursday’s edition.
To be a true role model for the community, the Suffolk News-Herald should do a follow-up to this story with statistics on teen pregnancy.
Teenage births are associated with lower annual income for the mother. Eighty percent of teen mothers must rely on welfare at some point. Teenage mothers are more likely to drop out of school. Only about one-third of teen mothers obtain a high school diploma.
Teenage pregnancies are associated with increased rates of alcohol and substance abuse, lower educational level and reduced earning potential in teen fathers.
In the United States, the annual cost of teen pregnancies from lost tax revenues, public assistance, child health care, foster care and involvement with the criminal justice system is estimated to be about $7 billion.

I sure would like to know where these stats came from. Unless you can show me otherwise, I'm going to declare them as "homemade". First, teenage births are associated with lower, middle, high and no-income mothers. My study revealed that alcohol and substance abuse have very little to do with teenage pregnancies. The open society and exposure to so much stuff on TV, magazines, music, video tapes, peer pressure, and lack of guidance are major contributors. So many of these kids do not do drugs or drink. They just find joy doing something else. The $7 billion you mentioned in the last paragraph is way off the mark for all the things you named. I believe its closer to $50 billion. Let me get away from all this stat stuff because stats are issued by responsible and irresponsible people and organizations. Also, generally, they can be framed to show whatever you want them to show. However, I agree with you, Andy, the SNH should do a follow-up to this story highlighting the adverse affects teenage pregnancies have on families and communties. Lastly, Andy, did you really mean to thank the SNH for glorifying teen pregnancies? Gr . .y Eure Br. . .t

Destiny...you understand sarcasm, right? McLaughlin was being sarcastic when he thanked the paper for the glorification of ignorance. He didn't say that alcohol and substance abuse CAUSED the pregnancies- he said that the pregnancies would CAUSE the abuse- as well as increase drop out rates and welfare dependents. Your figure of 50 billion is WAAAAAY off the mark- it's averaging from 6-9 billion according to National Campaign To Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy for the past few years. Where did you get your facts and figures?? If anyone would make a case that would show how costly pregnancy is in teens, it would be this group- and their 40 billion shy of your number! Either way- stupid story, poor facts, and extremely biased. Bet Gov. Palin is wishing the public was so understanding when her daughter became pregnant.

Wow, woman with 3 kids complaining about a man who fathered one of them, while he has 8 others with other women. She comes on stage screaming her head off about the sperm donor. she is working as a stripper, she stops and shows her moves, turns her butt and commences to act like she is dribbling a basketball with her fat buttocks....yes what self esteem that is. People like that get what they deserve It makes no difference if it some rotten tooth white redneck boy or girl who's best character is explained with language that would embarass any other illerate uneducated moron. There appears there is a LACK OF SELF ESTEEM in both cultures.
