Man charged in alleged rape

Published Monday, August 31, 2009

Suffolk Police on Monday charged a 35-year-old Suffolk man with the alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl.

Police say Derrick M. Hawkins, of the 100 block of South Sixth St., is charged with rape, abduction by force, aggravated sexual battery and seven other charges. The charges stem from an alleged incident that occurred Monday morning while the child was visiting a friend who lives in the same residence as Hawkins.

Hawkins was arrested at his residence. A search warrant of the property was executed by police.

Hawkins currently is being held without bond at Western Tidewater Regional Jail. Detective Carlos Gonzalez is the lead investigator.

Police seeking alleged counterfeiter

Suffolk Police are asking for the public’s assistance locating a man wanted for passing a counterfeit check.

On June 23, police say, a male used a check to purchase items at the Food Lion in the 6500 block of Townpoint Road. The check later was found to be counterfeit.

Warrants for forgery, uttering and petit larceny are on file for Joe Lee Winfield, 27, of the 300 block of Carver Circle in Portsmouth. Winfield is described as 5’11” tall and 200 pounds.

Detective John Jones is the investigator assigned to the case. Anyone who knows Winfield’s location is asked to contact Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Callers to Crime Line never have to give their names or appear in court, and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

Throw Hawkins into the general population for good measure...

And people think I'm too strict because I don't let my granddaughter go anywhere without me - except school. I don't let her spend the night at anyone's house. I don't let her "play over at her friends' house". She doesn't play outside unless I'm watching her. All too often I see little girls wandering around the streets of Suffolk unsupervised. I may be too strict, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
