‘Sugar,’ a name to remember
Published Saturday, February 21, 2009
Hampton Roads has been fortunate to have a number of elite athletes call the region their home. The National Basketball Association (NBA), National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB) all have products of Hampton Roads within the ranks of their lineups.
Suffolk hasn’t had the showing of these stars as Chesapeake, Norfolk and other cities across the region. That’s until now, as Suffolk has someone who has the potential to one day star in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), but has already committed to one of the elite basketball programs in the country.
King’s Fork senior TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers is a name to remember in Suffolk sports lore. She has been selected as one of 12 players to be on the East Team for the McDonald’s All-American High School Game to be held in Miami on Wednesday, Apr. 1. This is truly an honor.
Rodgers, who’s the reigning and three-time MVP of the Southeastern District and was a first team all-state selection last season, is one of 24 girls basketball players from a search of 900-1,200 nominees to be named a McDonald’s All-American. Rodgers has signed a scholarship offer from Georgetown.
Rodgers eclipsed the 2,000-point mark for her King’s Fork career earlier this season and was ranked the No. 9 ranked Class of 2009 player in the nation by slamonline.com and in the top 30 according to ESPN and the Blue Star Report.
Whether or not Rodgers continues her career in basketball after Georgetown, Suffolk should be proud that she can call our city home.

A name to remember huh? A must see huh? What happened on Monday night could not have been more appropriate after your post! Just as she has her entire career, Sugar chose to be selfish and skip practice once again, thus leading to her benching in the first quarter of the game Monday. I sure hope people rushed out to see her, as you so desired, so they could see what she is truly all about. She is talented, their is no doubt. However, she is extremely selfish, a terrible leader, and carries an attitude on the court as if she doesn't care about anything. What a great message to send to the younger players on the team. Sugar has been allowed to get away with whatever she wanted her entire high school career, because she was talented. However, the big fish in the small pond is about to be a small fish in a much larger pond, and there are hundreds of other girls who are as good if not much better than Sugar playing college ball now! She will not be allowed to get away with what she has been able to get away with in high school, just because people feel sorry for her. What a way to go out! You could have possibly helped your team move on in the Eastern region tournament, but because of your selfish ways the team was down big early, and not even Sugar could help save them! Hope everyone took your advice and showed up!

SUGAR is indeed a name to remember. Anyone who has crossed her path in the basketball arena knows that name. And contrary to what some apparently think, they wish they could be as good. She has carried the weight of her team all year and help to carry it all of her other high school years. I could say Congrats on being a Hoya! And also that I wish her much success with her upcoming college career. But.........it would be a waste of time. Because she already knows how proud I am of her. I tell her every opportunity that I get. She has her faults, as all of us do. BUT, she also has her storms that she has pressed her way through, without asking or expecting people to feel sorry for her. She is a very strong, intelligent, determined young lady that has been through more than most adults. But you wouldn't know it to see her. She always has that smile on her face. And that is what I hope to continue to see inspite of the nay-sayers who only wish harm upon a child. Fortunately for her and those of us around her who LOVE her dearly, God saw fit for it to be a different way. She is the best as far as I am concerned and once a Hoya she will continue to show just that. She has worked too hard her whole life for people who have no clue to look down upon her. Nothing and nobody has or will hold her down as long as God, her family, and real friends have anything to do with it. So to the haters Do U because surely she will continue to do her! I love you babygirl, Keda F.
