Fall scholarships announced

Published Thursday, February 26, 2009

Area high school students who are graduating this year and planning to attend Paul D. Camp Community College next fall should check out the following scholarship options:

Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship

Sponsored by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education, this scholarship is available at each of the 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System. PDCCC’s recipient will receive up to $3,000 for a full year of tuition, books and fees for fall 2009 and spring 2010 semesters.

With the goal of increasing access to higher education, the student selected for this merit-based scholarship will be a full-time, associate degree-seeking student attending college for the first time who has demonstrated academic excellence during high school, as well as a commitment to develop his or her leadership skills.

Presidential Scholarship

This annual $500 scholarship award is given to a graduating high school senior residing in Franklin, Suffolk, Isle of Wight or Southampton. Criteria for selection include a preferable 3.0 cumulative GPA or better (but no less than 2.50); enrollment in a degree of certificate program at PDCCC; and motivation shown by preparation for chosen vocation, including school subjects, related work and activities and community service. Also required are three letters of reference and an essay on how this scholarship will help the applicant achieve his or her educational goals.

Tech Prep Scholarships

These $500 scholarships are awarded to a 2009 Tech Prep graduate at Franklin High School, Lakeland High School, Nansemond River High School, Smithfield High School, Southampton High School and Windsor High School. The purpose is to support the transition of Tech Prep graduates into Tech Prep Programs at PDCCC.

Selection criteria include residency in Franklin, Suffolk, Isle of Wight or Southampton; a GPA of 2.0 or higher; enrollment in the PDCCC Tech Prep Program (completed in high school); a letter of reference from a Career and Technical Studies teacher; an essay on how continuing in a PDCCC Tech Prep Program will help the applicant; and documented successful completion of required sequential courses in one of the following Tech Prep programs: administrative support technology, industrial technology, marketing management or medical assistant.

Scholarship Deadlines

The application deadline for scholarships for 2009 graduating high school seniors is April 17.

Recipients will be notified by May 8. The application deadline for regular fall scholarships is June 26, with recipient notification by July 24. Regular fall scholarships will be featured in an upcoming column and information on both sets of scholarships will be posted on the college website.

Registration for fall semester classes is May 4 through Aug. 14. Fall semester begins Aug. 19.
