Saluting a campus leader
Published Thursday, January 29, 2009
Paul D. Camp Community College’s success over its 37-year history can be attributed to many factors, running the gamut from community support to employees who make a positive difference. At PDCCC, we not only celebrate our years of service, but also the members of our college family who excel in helping the college achieve its mission.
One vehicle for celebrating individual achievement at PDCCC is the College’s Excellence in Education Award, which annually recognizes a college employee who has made significant contributions over the past 12 months and has shown commitment to the philosophy of the comprehensive community college, to Paul D. Camp and to the communities it serves.
This year’s Excellence in Education Committee selected Dr. Candace Rogers, Professor and Head of Nursing and Allied Health, as the 2008 recipient of the Excellence in Education Award.
During the past year, Dr. Rogers developed and instituted guidelines to improve PDCCC’s Registered Nurse program, currently ranks in the top 20th percentile statewide, with a passing rate of over 80 percent on the state RN licensing exam.
She successfully chaired the College’s Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Reaffirmation Leadership Team while continuing to teach nursing courses. She also was instrumental in completing the self-study for the State Board of Nursing that yielded a full eight-year approval of the nursing program in January 2007.
In addition to her primary duties as professor and head of the nursing program, she also leads the PDCCC Nursing and Allied Health Advisory Committee.
From the program’s inception, she suggested and supported student and nursing faculty involvement in community-based care and volunteer service activities. As a result, all nursing courses now require service learning activities and utilize many community agencies for clinical experience.
In October 2007, she wrote two proposals that were submitted to the Obici Foundation: a nursing grant that resulted in a two-year award totaling $150,000 and a grant for a needs assessment for a dental hygiene program that was also funded. In July 2007, she co-wrote a $15,000 grant for a Hobbs Suffolk Campus nursing lab that was funded by the Virginia Community College System.
She was nominated by the Nursing Class of 2008 to “Who’s Who among America’s Teachers for 2006-2008. She is also an honored Lifetime Member of United Who’s Who and a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
She served as President of the Virginia League of Nursing in 2006-2007 and is a member of the Virginia Council of Associate Degree Program Heads, the National League f Nursing, the American Nurses Association, the Virginia Nurses Association, and the Virginia Community Colleges Association.
Dr. Rogers, we salute you!

Your hard work has paid off. We celebrate your success.
.....And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.
