Former BK owner sentenced in Franklin
Published Wednesday, July 1, 2009
The former owner of six area Burger King restaurants pleaded guilty in Franklin General District Court Monday to six misdemeanor counts of embezzlement in connection with her failure to pay meals taxes in that city.
Samina Azhar, the head of Azhar Holdings, LLC, owned the Burger King in Franklin, as well as two stores in Suffolk and stores in Windsor and Smithfield. Azhar pleaded guilty to 11 misdemeanor counts of failure to pay food tax in Suffolk General District Court in March.
The two Suffolk stores — both in North Suffolk — are under negotiations to be taken over by the Burger King Corporation. City Treasurer Ron Williams has twice postponed auctions of the equipment in the restaurants to allow the negotiations to take place.
As part of the plea deal in Franklin, Azhar, who travels frequently, was required to surrender her passport.
“There was some concern that she might leave the country and not come back,” said Franklin City Attorney Taylor Williams.
Azhar will be required to make monthly payments of about $2,865 to Franklin for 24 months.
Last week Azhar reached another plea deal in Isle of Wight County General District Court for failing to pay taxes at her restaurants in Windsor and Smithfield. She will be required to make monthly payments of $500 to both towns until the meal taxes she owes to each town — $13,501 to Windsor and $11,000 to Smithfield — are paid.

You are so right!!! Home grown citizens are not treated as well as newcomers. What's up with that?

BENA this family is being delicately punished because the cities involved need the money and to cut off this family's head would eliminate getting any. It's always all about the money. What the public sees and hears is only the tip of the underhanded iceberg. Looks to me like the family was allowed to delay paying taxes by possibly paying a price to do so......hmmmmmm

They should have been madeto pay the taxes instead of dragging it out. Does that mean that Burger King will now "pay" for them? What a sweet deal if they do!

When I wrote my first comments I thought it would be removed;this seems to happen quite often when the comments submitted speak the bold truth. So be it, but it is very evident that all citizens are not treated equal by the court systems in Virginia. As far as the comments regarding the spouse of this person, the Virginia Pilot had no problem printing and leaving comments which were a little more scorching than mine. It seems like Burger King named their new item on the menu correct (SLIDERS). This is exactly what this person did Slide one over on everyone especially their employees...
