Positive news from stimulus plan
Published Friday, July 31, 2009
It’s nice to hear some positive news coming from a government stimulus plan.
Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a measure to add an additional $2 billion to the “Cash for Clunkers” program that has helped jumpstart the nation’s automobile market and prove that a stimulus program designed with consumers in mind can work.
While the country is in desperate need of infrastructure projects, those are slow to stimulate the economy at a time when stores need sales and local governments and states need tax revenues. And, the success of this program is additional proof that Americans themselves are the best ones to allocate stimulus dollars rather than lawmakers.
Earlier this year, when Congress was debating the stimulus program, the hope was that investments in programs and state projects would trickle down to more jobs and needed sales. It hasn’t necessarily worked that way.
Now, to be honest, a majority of the approved stimulus funds have yet to be spent, but that in itself proves that the federal government is too inefficient and too tied up in red tape to react quickly to the demands of a sluggish economy.
The “Cash for Clunkers” program, which provides up to $4,500 for a trade-in of a low fuel economy, older car in exchange for a new, more fuel efficient replacement, is a huge success and one that is proving itself right here in Suffolk.
Local car dealers have reported a doubling or tripling of their weekly sales over the past week and are excited about what the coming weeks may hold as more stimulus dollars are approved.
If the nation’s economy needs a bailout, let’s start by giving the money to those who are best designed to spend it … the consumers.

My grand kids, and great grand kids (unborn) are so glad to hear it as well that since they will be paying for it. Oh yea the cash for clunkers isnt for all citizens, there are qualifictions and if you are over qualified you cant participate in the program. . This program is really no different than Freddie and Fannie.Financial instituions will take the hit again for those who cannot make their car payments. There was a legal house of prostitution named the Mustang Ranch that the owner failed to pay his taxes, well since he wasnt a politician, he was put in jail. The governement took over its operation and within a year they had to close it down because they didnt know how to manage it or run it. OMG if you cant run a house of illrepute how can they run any other business like a bank, insurance company a car company or health care? Yes my grand kids and unborn great great grand kids are thrilled to pay for others who think that government is our savior. I apologize for my forgetting that Obama is the savior and he thinks he is.

I agree, the stimulus plan is working, but slowly. But then that is not a whole lot different than working in them peanut and cotton fields in Suffolk. We plant the seeds in April and May. Then spend the hot summer chopping the fields, feeding the mules and animals while waiting for the crops (that's our stimulus) to get ready. Then, in the Fall season we finally can harvest them crops and get money to pay some bills. So, Stimulus does not mean Instant Results! Oh, my grandchildren probably are not going to mind paying for the expenses incurred today, because their grandchildren are going to pay for the debts of their parents. I mean, that's the way it happens. G.Eure B.

If it's working why are they asking for more? Your analogy is a joke. You say thats just the way it is. Never since the day this country was founded have we seen the hundreds of years of debt from Washignton to Bush and now the socialsit in the WH. The only thing in your explanation above that makes any sense is bringing up the word mule and that is what this adminstration is. Just its a whole heard of them.
Could it be that you are receivng support from many people like myself who foot the bill for those who dont contribute. But ride on the backs of others thinking that we owe you something, You think that you are intitled? If so, I suggest you read the constitution and the BoR. As for you describing farming, sorry it's changed over the years. Im tied of harvesting from the fruits of my labor and paying for someone else's bills.

I am proud to say I know a lot about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Why, I'll never forget that day I went to the Suffolk courthouse to register and saw the person in front of me register and come out in 3 minutes. When my time came the clerk gave me about 10 minutes to read the constitution and answer a 20 question essay. Needless to say,I was not able to register that day. Also, I learned the Pledge of Allegience. In school just about every day we had to say it in unison. The part that I remember most thru the years is....with liberty and justice for all. That was not true that day I tried to register to vote. But I am very happy that things have changed over the years. Now a lot of people be talking about the taxes they pay and so forth. But I believe if they looked at their tax return (Form 1040) carefully they would see that after they get their deductions for earned income credit; age; children education; business deductions;medical; home ownership and taxes their taxable income is ZERO (0). Yet, they are generally the persons talking about how much taxes they pay and the bills they foot. Really, they are the beneficiaries of the tax breaks and sadly, they do not realize it. So let us thank Mr. Obama for all that he is trying to do. Just like them crops(our stimulus)it takes time for the harvest to arrive. G.Eure B
