Kids College offers summer options

Kids College 2010 at PDCCC starts June 21 and runs every week thereafter through Aug. 13. More than 40 different class choices in four topical areas will be featured (career exploration, creative arts, hobbies and interests and science, technology, engineering and math).

Following are classes scheduled for June:

Drawing & Sketching Essentials I —Taught by Stephanie Hancock, this is the perfect studio class for young artists looking to learn or refine their drawing skills. Starting with hard and soft pencils and then moving into color, students will explore the essentials of drawing and sketching through a variety of subject matter, still life and sketching outside. Projects can be adapted to student skill level. Designed for rising sixth through eighth graders, this class meets from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 21 through June 25. Tuition is $80.

Drawing & Sketching Essentials II is offered the same dates: June 21 through June 25, from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuition is $80.

A Summer of Fashion — This class is presented by Tiffany Machado from Old Dominion University (ODU) and designed for rising eighth through 12th graders. Inspired by ODU’s Summer Fashion Academy, this special offering covers the exciting field of fashion design and merchandising and explores and discusses current industry trends through the development of several hands-on activities focused on the career fields of fashion design, sketching, trend forecasting, visual merchandising and buying. Tuition is $45.

Is There a Doctor in the House? Designed for rising eight through 12th graders, this course is taught by Southampton Memorial Hospital staff. Classes meet June 22 through June 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will explore career opportunities in health care and practice organ transplants and being a detective. They will also learn how to cast broken arms, learn about the drama of emergency care, and more. Tuition is $40.

Other June Offerings

A Pirate’s Life for rising second through fourth graders will meet June 24 and June 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (tuition: $50); Safe Sitter Certification for rising sixth through 12th graders will meet June 25, July 2 and Aug. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (tuition: $70); Beading with Meaning will be offered June 28 from 9 a.m. to noon for rising third through 10th graders (tuition: $20); Birds, Bees, Butterflies & Trees: Junior Master Gardening Camp for rising second through fifth graders will meet June 28 through July 2 from 8:30 a.m. to noon (tuition: $25); and Talking Hands (sign language) for rising second to 12th graders will meet June 29 and July 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (tuition: $40).
