Cave leaves economic post
Published Tuesday, May 26, 2009
Another high-ranking member of the Suffolk city administration is leaving the city.
Cynthia Cave, director of economic development, resigned Thursday, said Suffolk spokeswoman Debbie George. Kevin Hughes, economic development manager, will serve as acting director of economic development.
Cave had been with the city only seven months. Before coming to Suffolk, she was economic development director in Prince George County and Prince Edward County; prior to that, she was director of community and economic development for Southampton County.
James H. Faulk, chairman of the Economic Development Authority, declined to comment on Cave’s departure when reached by phone Thursday, except to say that it was not forced.
“Certainly, it was her decision to leave,” Faulk said. “We just hate the fact that she left on us. We’re wishing her Godspeed.”
Cave is the latest in a string of high-ranking city administrators to leave the city or get fired in the past two years, from Assistant City Manager Cindy Rohlf to Cave’s predecessor, Tom O’Grady. Others have included City Assessor Maria Kattmann, Finance Director Christine Ledford, Downtown Coordinator Elizabeth McCoury and Plans and Policy Coordinator Jeryl Phillips.
Others, such as Director of Communications Dennis Craff, City Manager Jim Vacalis and Police Chief William Freeman, retired within the last two years.

Why are so many in the VA Pilot comments section blaming the City Manager Selena Cuffee-Glenn. Suffolk has had problems well before she came to Suffolk. Remember the Miles Standish days. HOW SOON WE FORGET!!! I wish people stop trying to blame the BLACK Lady thats in charge. CHANGE HAS CAME NOW GET OVER IT!!!!!!

OD Read the Virginia Pilot comments and see who is being blamed. Race has been a issue for a long time. I guess you wouldn't know.

Iam commenting on the article here. You have a problem with the VA. Pilot speak to them. Is it abt race or is it about bad judgemnt on the CM part? Or is it because of her possible bad managemnt skills Maybe its about her and having power. Maybe she has no real HR skills. I tend to try and look at ones character not skin color. It is clear (no pun)that there are some issues down on Market Street and I would hope to believe that the good people who were recruited didnt up and leave over race. But then that arguement might be a part of the problem and the other side of the argument could be another fault of the CM is a bad judge when it comes to hiring or firing one over her mistake/s. The real issue and question is WHY???
