MMA fight school opens

Folks interested in the martial arts have another training option with the opening of Suffolk MMA Academy.
The school, located at 571 E. Constance Road, will give area residents a unique opportunity to learn about mixed martial arts, which combines the best techniques of several fighting systems — including kick-boxing, jiu-jitsu and wrestling — to create a well-rounded fighting system.
“MMA training offers a great way to develop character, as well as fitness,” said Gary Taylor, the manager at Suffolk MMA. “Training in MMA is not only about self defense, but also respecting others and working as a team to reach your personal goals.”
The MMA fighting style has become wildly popular on television and pay-per-view’s Ultimate Fighting Championship, and it has enjoyed explosive growth throughout the nation.
Suffolk MMA offers a variety of programs for men, women and children to get them started in the new sport. In addition to highly popular kickboxing and grappling classes that already are offered, Suffolk MMA also plans a CrossFit class.
CrossFit is a principal strength and conditioning program that many police academies and tactical operation teams have adopted, as well as hundreds of other elite and professional athletes around the world.
“Suffolk MMA offers a distinctive workout program that will be an excellent opportunity for people trying to meet their wellness goals in a new and innovative manner,” Suffolk Mayor Linda T. Johnson said of the new business.
