Robber claimed to be collecting for charity

Published Monday, November 2, 2009

Suffolk police are looking for a man who passed himself off as a charity worker in order to get inside a home and rob its occupant on Sunday.

Suffolk spokeswoman Debbie George said Monday that the resident of a home in the 1600 block of First Avenue heard a knock at his door about 7 p.m. Sunday.

A man outside asked the home’s occupant if he wanted to make a donation to charity and then asked to come inside to facilitate the transaction, George said.

At that time, she said, “the suspect produced a knife and said, ‘Give it up.’”

The suspect — described as a black male, wearing a black jacket with the hood drawn around his head — got $40 from the victim and fled the scene, George said.

Anyone with information about the robbery should contact Crime Line at 1-888-Lock-U-Up. Crime Line callers do not have to give their names or appear in court. If a caller’s information leads to an arrest, the caller can qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.

OD being a former police officer, If this person comes to my door and pulls out a knife, would it be alright to shoot him as long as I drag him into the house afterwards or can I shoot him and leave him on the front porch?Which would be the best way to handle this, either way the crook gets shot, there is no way around that.I always keep a loaded shotgun by the front door.

There has been numerous times where a person has had a loaded weapon and froze up when the time came to use it. especially when they appeared to be so trigger happy.
