Meals on Wheels gets $5,000 grant

Published Saturday, November 7, 2009

The Pruden Foundation has presented Suffolk Meals on Wheels a $5,000 grant to continue the mission of delivering meals to seniors and the disabled in the Suffolk and the Isle of Wight region.

According to Roseland Lowe Worrell, interim executive director, the grant will help the organization continue it work in the area.

“Providing meals in this area is a large task,” she stated. “Our mission is vital, our goals are significant, and the need in these two areas is enormous. As a meal provider, we do more than just nourish the body. Our meals help to maintain health and aid recovery, while providing a method of keeping contact between those homebound and the outside world.

The program helps participants maintain independence by enabling them to stay in their homes instead of in healthcare facilities.

Last year, Suffolk Meals on Wheels served more than 33,000 meals in the region. Recipients get two meals daily at a total cost of $5. If financial assistance is needed, Senior Services is there to help.

The organization receives no financial assistance from the county, city, state or federal government, and it is not a United Way agency. Recipient fees, private donations and grants provide all of the funds to support the organization.

Suffolk Meals on Wheels is located in Sentara Obici Hospital and has about 200 volunteers in Suffolk and Isle of Wight County who serve as drivers and administrative support. The volunteers include private citizens, business associates, church organizations and civic organizations, and they range in age from youth to seniors.

Suffolk Meals on Wheels is a member of Meals on Wheels Association of America, which is based in Alexandria, Virginia. It is American’s oldest and largest organization representing those organizations that provide meal services to those in need.
