Even without a fee, trash pickup’s not free
Published Tuesday, October 20, 2009
This letter is in reference to the city of Suffolk’s ideas on what to do with the city’s budget surplus.
A decision to reinstate the so-called free bulk trash pickup for citizens would be a good one. The idea that trash pickup ever was free is not correct. We taxpayers have paid for this service with every tax bill.
We taxpayers bought the trucks and paid the drivers’ and dispatchers’ salaries. City officials cut this necessary service to all citizens and replaced it with an unpopular and unjustified pickup fee.
The budget surplus came from the citizens and should be given back to them. The idea of giving bonuses to city employees for doing their jobs in these tough economic times is inappropriate.
I recommend that some of the surplus money be used to issue a large trash can to each household in the city. All sections of Suffolk should be treated equally.

Very well said William. We are already paying through the nose, and the fee based on cubic feet ie rediculous. This is government at its worst. I say vote the bums out if they won't listen.

Let the city issue to all taxpayers one large trashcan. If he or she cant survive a week with that, then the taxpayer shoulf PAY for as second or third. Now how do you propose to take care of a commerical customer not counting one where he has a clear need for something bigger.
Cities all over control the type of receptable size and actual placement of the can. I know of cities where there are no garbage men on the truck and its all mechanical. If something ends up on the street, guess what its your problem.
IBig brother sooner or later is going to charge you an exhale tax CO2. Your going to have to buy and have your carbon footprint paid for. If your a farmer and raise cows guess what?

Well here's a surprise. I figured Mr. Harward woud want the surplus to be used to fund his health care. News flash . . . did you know that property taxes and sales taxes are used to fund city services? Yes boys and girls . . . the city employees would like to get paid just like you! And those big shiney like my hiney trucks ain't free either!
Now there is a point of when taxes are excessive and that's a very complicated issue. Free bulk pickup should be a "thank you very much for letting us dump our trash in your fine city" bonus (from SPCA or whoever will own them shortly) for us Suffolkians. Several years ago I purchased a second can because I found myself going to the dump about ten times a year just to get rid of the large boxes that diapers, beer and Dale Earnhardt china plates come in. I figured my time was pretty precious and the cost of gas ain't cheap.
