Almost 5 p.m is still not 5 p.m.

Published Friday, October 23, 2009

I'd like to comment on the poor service afforded to the citizens of Suffolk by the local DMV office.

On Oct. 21, I arrived at the office at 4:57 p.m. to pick up a pamphlet. Approaching the door, I was denied entry by the guard, who said it was 5 p.m., the advertised closing time.

It was not closing time yet, and regardless of how they may set their clocks inside the building, it doesn't change the fact that the citizens are entitled to have the office open during its advertised time.

It is a state office and is there to conduct business for the citizens of the state. Each of the employees is paid to support the citizens of Suffolk until 5 p.m., not until almost 5 p.m.

Because of their poor service, I now have to leave work a little early again to try to get this pamphlet.

The irony in this? As I drove home, the 5 o'clock news started on the radio.

Why on earth would you want to go to DMV in the first place ?...all documents, forms and booklets are available online to print..No computer go the the library They are opened on Sat and they would be glad to help you access and print the forms booklets etc.

Typically I've been sick at the thought of having to do business with the DMV. But recently, I HAD to go to the DMV- business could not be conducted online- and I can tell you this- it was a WONDERFUL experience!! In and out in less than 20 minutes- with only the most polite tellers ( I had 3). If you're going into the DMV with 3 minutes left on the clock...why should someone have to work overtime for you? Example-any retail store you go in gives you the '15 minutes' left warning- that doesn't mean keep shopping- that means- time to wrap it up. Granted you were just there for a pamphlet- but next time- you may need to plan your visit better. Their quitting time is just as important as yours.
