Driving the ball: King’s Fork senior Beth Wehner drives the ball toward the Western Branch arc during the first half of Thursday afternoon’s match at King’s Fork. It was the last match of the season for KF and the last home match for seven seniors. King’s Fork more than doubled its program record for wins in a season with a 7-8-1 record.
Lady Bulldogs set new standard

King’s Fork’s two Suffolk rivals are both headed on into the field hockey postseason while KF’s season came to a close Thursday afternoon, but the Lady Bulldogs have plenty to be proud of and plenty to build on.
Under first-year head coach Mollie Turner, the Lady Bulldogs blew away their program records for overall wins and Southeastern District wins, all while going through far more than their fair share of drama.
Despite a 6-0 loss to Western Branch on Thursday, the Lady Bruins enter next week’s district tournament as the No. 2 seed behind Lakeland, King’s Fork finishes with seven victories (7-8-1) overall and three district wins (3-6). Three wins overall had been the school record prior to this, KF’s sixth season.
Seven Lady Bulldog seniors played their final game on Thursday: Ashley Carter, Stephanie Livingston, Rachael Fiel, Shawnda Lee, Beth Wehner, Melissa Bozyazko and Brandy Webb.
Turner guided the team through a number of injuries throughout the season and a rash of the flu that sidelined some players and forced a couple other players to play through it recently. And about four weeks ago, the team was both lucky and unlucky to be in a bus accident just south of the James River Bridge during a rainy night following a match in Newport News.
Eleven players went to the hospital immediately after the accident with varying degrees of injuries and the team didn’t play for about a week after the accident.
Once back in action though, the Lady Bulldogs had their best stretch of the season, winning three out of four matches. In that streak was a remarkable comeback, with two KF goals in the last four minutes for a 3-2 win over district opponent Oscar Smith, and a Senior Day win, 3-1 over Heritage.
“Of course every coach likes to win, but this season, in some ways, we really haven’t cared about our record,” said Turner.
“I’ve had seniors telling me this is the best year they’ve ever played, and they’ve all played field hockey for four to eight or more years. Plus, that’s with the season sort of being against all odds and having a lot of things thrown in there,” said Turner.

Let's not get too excited about this. Anyone that knows anything about field hockey knows that these 7 wins this year came over absolutely no teams that have any field hockey tradition whatsoever. Also, all year long I've read negative comments, from one poster in particular, about previous coaches because they actually disciplined certain individuals and sat them for games because they couldn't come to practice or various other excuses for missing time. I guess the coach this year must have just let all that slide for the sake of winning a few meaningless games. If you know this program you know that there are certain individuals on the team, who were all about themselves, and wanted nothing to do with the team concept at all, as well as their parents. Parents always seem to complain when they think their little superstar is being treated unfairly, due to skipping practices or whatnot for whatever reason. The simple fact is there is a winning program just a few miles down the road whose leader is a strong disciplinarian, and doesn't let anything fly. If you thought the previous coaches were so bad for disciplining your children on the field hockey field, then you should have transferred to the field hockey powerhouse. Oh wait, that's right, you wouldn't have lasted there for one second because what you thought was so strict was actually somewhat leniant compared to that. Lakeland's field hockey program has been built on strong work ethic and discipline, and their coach definitely deserves all the credit in the world. While it is great to have seven wins for the first time, let's not think that in the coming years there will be any district championships coming to King's Fork. With a senior heavy team returning this year, and a very weak schedule, they should have finally come into their own and won these games. However, it had nothing to do with coaching so get off your high horse trying to blame the previous coaches for all your previous problems!

"uncheels"- I don't know exactly what your problem is but I must say that its rather sick to read such a comment as the one you have posted here. I will say that these girls have not been pushed the way they have this year to be the best they can be. Nor have they had the proper coaching from the coaches in the past! That being FACT! A few of these girls have been coached by Tara in past years and from what I've seen would do fine under her current coaching methods. Seems that you don't have your facts straight!
If YOU knew this team you would know that ALL of these girls are about each other. This is the first year that I have seen that these girls have had coaches that have brought them together as a team! Their wins may not have included beating LHS but who really cares? Excuse me, I guess you care, atleast you seem to care! Everyone likes to win when playing sports however, winning is not what playing sports is all about!
Job well done to the KFFH Girls for an outstanding year that stands out above the years before! Under the current coaching you will only improve in the years to come and continue to win more and more games despite what "uncheels" has to say! All of you are superstars and I don't recall any of you skipping practices nor do I recall any of the parents complaining about anything other than their daughter's complaining about the coaching in the past. I do believe that in being a parent sometimes you are the voice of your children when it is not respectful of your child to do so. Sounds to me that "uncheels" thinks they know what they are speaking of here but can't seem to throw a name out!
"uncheels"- I would like to remind you that public information is a wonderful thing and sometimes some people know people in places that you may wish they did not. That being said.......you never know when someone may look into who the person is behind this comment! Enjoy your weekend "uncheels"!
PS! Congrats to Tara and her team! She is infact, one of the best coaches around this area and her teams stats prove that! I hope they take it all the way!
I'm sure that the LHS coach is not going to be thrilled to see that someone is speaking poorly of a team and throwing her team into the mix of the conversation!

So why did BOTH of you comment about LHS when they were by no means a part of this story?
Posted by Suffolkchick (anonymous) on October 24, 2009 at 10:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)
AM:
The ONLY reason I commented on LHS's team and their coach is because they are being spoken of by someone else as if they are representing the LHS team in some way. For anyone to come on here and bad mouth these girls and suggest that what they have done this year is no good because LHS has a better program and a better coach is just sick and from knowing Tara for a very long time I'm sure she would not appreciate it one bit!
As a parent of one of the girls on the KFFH team I feel that I have EVERY right to comment and defend what is being said about these girls in the first comment. I don't give a rats tail who they played and beat or not beat! What matters is that they played and some played with injuries that they should not have been playing with because no one player on this team is for themselves they are for each other and what is best for the team!
KFFH's program has not been around as long as the other area schools nor have they had a coaching staff to build a solid foundation. They now have 3 coaches that are willing to do so and it shows in their stats from this season no matter who they played! Sorry if that upsets the past coaches but its fact pure and simple the stats don't lie!

Every coach has a different style of coaching and they are never going to please everyone. But in order to have a successful and rewarding program you have to have discipline and know what you're doing as a coach. suffolkchick you don't seem to comprehend what uncheels was saying because I didn't see anything in that post that spoke poorly of Tara or her program. It actually spoke highly of LHS. Instead of badmouthing past coaches you need to take a step back and see what they have done at KFHS. Oviously a track coach doesn't know much about coaching field hockey. So this years success shows how the previous coaches and players' hard work has paid off. Look at the stats! Congrats to the Lady Bulldogs and their success this year.

Congratulations to those girls-they deserve the acknowledgment and so does the coach. It is unfortunate that the previous coaches did not have as many wins, however it is showing poor sportsmanship to put this team down. One would like to think previous coaches would be praising this team and not displaying jealousy.

monarch7: Seems to me that you can not comprehend my comment. I did not mention anything being spoken poorly of the LHS Team. However, I do not understand why it is that the statements were even made regarding LHS. This article is about what the KFH girls have done. LHS girls and their Coach were spoken of in the comment in poor taste if you as my opinion. To discredit these girls after the season they have had and suggest that they should transfer to the "field hockey powerhouse" of LHS is just in poor taste coming from a past coach.
Also, I have not bad mouthed any coach on here. I have simply stated that with the current coaches they are on the right track of building a great program that may even compare to the other programs in the city as some point.
If anyone is bad mouthing a coach its you with your comment regarding a track coach not knowing anything about field hockey. The Varsity coach may be a track coach but she also has played field hockey and she did a wonderful job with these girls both on the field and off the field bringing them together as a team and as friends. There is much more to being a coach than just knowing the game. I do believe that their season shows this. The JV coach played field hockey at both the highschool level as well as in college and has coached in the past, Mr. Brown has also been coaching and playing the sport for years! Together all three have plenty of experience and did a wonderful job this season.
If you ask any one of these girls about their current and past coaches they will tell you the exact same thing.
These girls did a great job this season and I do not feel that they should of had to see such a comment from a former coach regarding this article. Atleast one has the tact to post a decent comment.

as a player for KFFH i am extremely appreciative of the season we had this year. I can honestly say with the seasons i have played in the past this was by far the BEST. I would like to thank all of the coaches this past season for not only being there for me, but also all the other girls on the team. With the obstacles that occured this season we all became alot closer and there wasn't as much on field drama as there was in the past, and there were more wins, loses, and team bonding situations (not all of which were the best way to bond but in a certain way worked.) We may not be going to the tournament, but this season has brought us much closer and i am sad that it is over as well as my last. So again thank you Coach Molly, Coach Aly, Coach Brownie, and all my team mates for a great ending to my high school field hockey career.

And, as for another player for KFFH i am also EXTREMELY proud of the girls on my team, and also of my coaches this year. This is by far the teams most successful year, and also my most successful year as a field hockey player. dispite many obsticles we have faced, whether it be bus accidents, sicknessess or injuries, our team pulled together and got through it all, and most importantly, we did it for the love of our team and for the love of the game. the coaches this year have been outstanding, all three of them have showed that they care about the program and they really do want all of the girls to succeed. and as for the person that said the track coach, coach turner, doesn't know anything about field hockey, get your information straight, because she is VERY knowledgable of the game, and you are obviously not out on the field at our practices or on the side lines during our games to know this. So unless you really know your information, don't post it. Thank you to all the girls on the KFHS field hockey team, and the coaches. I will never ever forget you, you made my senior season the best season ever.
