Two candidates up for sheriff

Published Saturday, October 31, 2009

While the statewide races for governor and lieutenant governor may have grabbed the biggest headlines, Suffolk voters have a big local races to weigh in on.

Tuesday voters will go to the polls to choose who their sheriff will be for the next four years, and will also find three other constitutional officers on the ballot.

Incumbent sheriff Raleigh H. Isaacs Sr. is facing off against challenger Jay Clason.

Clason owns a travel agency with his wife, and was a former Christian school principal at schools across the country. He bases his qualifications for the position on his military experience, however — he spent 37 years as an Army reservist, being called up numerous times and shipped off to 37 countries and 48 states as part of his duties. He helped rebuild Bosnia after years of war, and stressed inter-agency communication to law enforcement departments around the world.

Isaacs is a 16-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, with a total of 48 years in law enforcement — most of it with the Nansemond County and Suffolk police departments. He also has served as president of the Virginia Sheriff’s Association and as state president of V.A.L.E.C.O. (Virginia Association of Locally Elected Constitutional Officers).

Besides the sheriff’s office, voters will find three uncontested constitutional officers on the ballot. Commissioner of the Revenue Thomas Hazelwood, Treasurer Ron Williams and Commonwealth’s Attorney C. Philips Ferguson are up for re-election to their positions.

A fifth constitutional officer, Clerk of Circuit Court Randy Carter, comes up for election at another time.

All this experience that Clason says he has is "his-say" -can anyone verify this? Does he have any education or training to back it up? I am concerned about a man that has NO clue what the position entails- & can only look at the International level? Come on- talk to the current deputies- they enjoy their jobs & responsibilities & respect their boss- the current Sheriff Isaacs. Knowing BOTH men- my vote is with-
ISAACS!!!

I dont think Clauson would make up crap abt his military experience.Where there is no clue is the question of honor, character, honesty of the incumbent. Its not about his job performance.

I think it's time to give someone else a chance to be the sheriff.

O.D., for starts, the candidate you are supporting here spells his last name as Clason.

Since you put us on the topic of honor, character or honesty of Sheriff Isaacs, let's look at all the candidates.

Mr. Clason has a video on his campaign webpage. That video was shot in his church without it's permission. Political activity by a church can have it's tax exempt status revoked. Also, there is no entry for the value of the in kind service for this video on the few campaign finance filings by Mr. Clason.

Mr. Clason owns a pickup truck with Michigan plates on it. Does Mr. Clason pay city taxes on that truck here in Suffolk like the rest of the citizens he hopes to represent? How long has he lived in Suffolk and not registered this truck in Virginia? Is his residence Virginia or Michigan? If it's Michigan, he shouldn't even be running since he's not a Virginia resident.

Mr. Clason seems to have difficulty filing his campaign finance statements in a timely manner. And some were not filed at all. In all of his financial statements there is no entry for the purchase of his campaign signs, which there are plenty of out there. If you think, this is made up, go to the State Board of Elections website under financial reports and see for yourself.

The manner in which his campaign finances have handled raises troubling questions. Is Mr. Clason or his campaign staff so inept they can't seem to do this properly? Or is Mr. Clason playing fast and loose with the rules? I don't know but in either instance it raises troubling questions. Here's a man who want to be Sheriff and manage a 1 million dollar budget and he can't get this right.

Just some food for thought and for folks to look at both sides of this election.

Well then I stand corrected, duly noted and accepted goober.
It appears that they both have questionable practices of abuse of power and wanting the power. I still stand with VOAI. It appears also that Clason has a bad advisor or group of. Where as the good sheriff has a partner/s in crime that carries a lot of weight and legal ramifications that could lead to jail time and personal destruction of ones career. People already sworn to protect and serve at the peoples choosing. Public servants should be held accountable for their actions and or lack of in both criminal and civil matters. In the case of Issacs, why does he think that he is isnt to be held accountable? Again your comments duly noted and appreciated.

vote with your soul, your internal measuring stick of whats right and wrong, not popular. This country has lost so much of it's identity because a few have taken hostage and attempted to execute the basic principles and morals this country was founded on. Stand for something-vote for someone who illustrates the qualities YOU hold firm not the qualities the media and others say you should have. Again vote with your soul-think about what you want in a leader and pull the lever.

I noticed this evening that Clason has been putting his bumper stickers on Isaacs signs.

I also would like to know how Clason will save money when he wants to put deputies out on patrol. He will need more money to hire more deputies and buy more cars. Besides it's the Suffolk police departments job to do that.

Sea. Did you see him in the act?. The deputies are full fledged law enforcement officers, its of my opinion there should be no distinction between who's job is what and who is to do what.

Could someone please post the link(s) to the financial disclosures for this race? I'm sure they are online but can't seem to find them. They would be at the state level right?

I heard that the incumbent outraised raised and outspent Mr. Clason by large numbers but would like to see the reports for myself.

Thank you

Change has been the theme now for over 3 years..VOAI TODAY if what has been reported here regarding the antics and legal status of Clason's lack of following rules, between the two evils of the present sheriff and his challenger, the challenger hasnt abused his power for self gain or protection. I see no possible conspiracy VOAI
