‘Sugar’ keeps leading Lady Hoyas

For the second time this season, Georgetown freshman TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers (King’s Fork) was named to the Big East Honor Roll in women’s basketball.

Rodgers led the Lady Hoyas with 27 points in a 59-50 win over Rutgers Sunday in Washington, D.C. Rodgers made five three-pointers and had five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Georgetown (18-3, 7-1) is tied for second in the Big East.

Rodgers has won four Big East Rookie of the Week awards this season. She’s leading the Big East in scoring at 19.0 points per game.

Chowan sophomore Ransheda Jennings (King’s Fork) scored 27 points Monday evening but the Lady Hawks still fell to conference foe Livingstone 91-86.

Jennings made 11-of-19 field-goal attempts and 5-of-6 free throws; she also had four rebounds and three steals. For the season, Jennings is leading her team with 14.6 points, 2.9 steals and 1.1 blocked shots per game.

Chowan is 7-11 overall and 4-9 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Chowan’s men’s basketball team continued its streak of good play in the CIAA with a 64-58 win over Livingstone Monday.

Junior Mark Brown (Nansemond River) had 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and played all 40 minutes for the Hawks (13-5, 9-3). Senior Jaleel Nelson (Lakeland) added 10 points and three assists.

Both Chowan teams play at St. Augustine’s on Thursday evening.

Winthrop’s men’s basketball team defeated Big South leader Coastal Carolina 67-64 on Saturday in Rock Hill, S.C. The win gave the Eagles (11-10, 7-4) six wins out of their last seven games, all being conference games. Coastal Carolina dropped to 9-2 in the Big South.

Sophomore Andre Jones (Nansemond River) played 26 minutes off the bench for Winthrop, getting eight points and three assists.

Winthrop plays at conference rival Liberty Thursday evening.

Two former Lakeland Cavaliers, now at different colleges, placed highly at the Penn State National track meet Friday and Saturday in State College, Pa.

Hampton junior Predist Walker made it through two preliminary rounds and finished fourth in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.87 seconds.

St. Augustine’s sophomore Christopher Copeland finished fifth in the high jump with a mark of 6-feet-10.25.
