Lakeland’s field hockey team celebrates following the championship game of the Southeastern District Tournament. Lakeland kept going to the state semifinals for the first time the Lady Cavaliers had reached the VHSL Group AAA State Tournament. Lakeland, led by head coach Tara Worley, top left, won the State Sportsmanship Award for VHSL Group AAA.

First Baptist point guard Ben Joslin drives against Chesapeake Bay during the second half of Tuesday’s game at Chesapeake Bay. Joslin scored 10 points, including two important three-pointers that extended First Baptist’s lead in the second half, as the Crusaders went on to a 57-41 win in their first game of the 2009-10 season.

Mike Mason, left, was a standout at wide receiver, defensive back and on special teams during his football career at King’s Fork. Mason is now a freshman on Old Dominion’s football team and is being prepped as a defensive back during his redshirt year. ODU is 8-2 in its first football season in 69 years with one game, at VMI on Nov. 21, remaining.
