Fire units were dispatched to yet another blaze involving multiple tires on Saturday.

Smoke stemming from the SPSA recycling plant continued to make its presence known throughout the city, while Suffolk firefighters and area crews responded to Suffolk Used Auto Parts at Portsmouth Boulevard and Suburban Drive. The fires occurred just approximately two miles apart; however, they were deemed coincidental until further investigation.

&uot;It is unusual to have two fires of this nature occur in such a short period of time,&uot; said Capt. Jim Judkins, public information officer for the Suffolk Fire Department.

It’s estimated that the area ablaze held about 700 tires and six cars in a wooded section of the site. Some manpower was diverted from the SPSA recycling facility to secure the area around the auto parts location. As of 6 p.m. Saturday, Judkins said the fire was contained and there are no injuries or threats to surrounding communities.

The first fire was reported just after noon, and the auto parts incident around 5 p.m.

This scenario is a slight contrast to the SPSA fire in that the blaze is close to residential areas, and abuts the Glendale Retirement Home, just one-mile from John F. Kennedy Middle School. Fortunately, the wind was blowing the smoke away from the residences across Portsmouth Boulevard. This, however, continued to pose a threat to Shingle Creek, which flows into the Nansemond River.

Judkins anticipates that fire officials will remain on scene at both locations through the next 24-36 hours.
