Most young tennis players would be satisfied with just one victory in a tennis tournament. But not Barton Grover. The 13-year-old Nansemond-Suffolk Academy student took three titles at the Suffolk Junior Invitational Tournament on Monday and Tuesday.

After defeating Vincent Marsteller (ranked second at Hampton Roads Academy) to take the 16 and under title on Monday, Grover defeated Austin Brauley (who is Catholic’s top-ranked varsity player) in the 14 and under championship on Tuesday. He also teamed with fellow NSA student Heather Walton to win the 16 and under mixed double championship. Barton’s older brother Nathaniel won the 18 and under singles title, defeating Chesapeake’s Josh Lewis 6-3, 6-0.

Of his three matches, Grover said, &uot;(Vincent) was the hardest, because he was powerful, and he hit the ball a lot harder than I did.&uot; Marsteller was the only opponent to win a set from Grover, taking the first set 7-5 before falling 3-6 and 0-6.

&uot;I was trying to hit with him in the first, and he overpowered me. But in the second, I started moving him around, and he got tired.&uot;

Grover and Walton defeated Christina Panagopulos and Bobby Pablo in the doubles final. &uot;I thought we’d win, because Bart’s a really good player,&uot; said Walton, who teamed with Grover to win the 14 and under mixed doubles title in 2001.

Walton, who teamed with Christina’s sister Catherine to win the 16 and under doubles title and won the 16 and under singles title, called the forehand her best shot. &uot;I’m number six on the tennis team at NSA, but I think I’ll move up this year.&uot;
