Rebekah I. Brown

Rebekah Ida Brown of Suffolk passed away on Friday, June 28, 2002.

Born on Sept. 24, 1958, she was the youngest daughter of 10 children to Clarence and Angeles Brown in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Her parents, grandmother, Ida L. Hyman, and two of her siblings, Juan Ernesto Rosa and Victoria O. Peterson-Brewley, preceded her in death.

She attended Medgar Evers College, Brooklyn, and received her bachelor of science degree from Norfolk State University. She held several professional level positions in the financial field during her years in New York City.

While in Suffolk, she was employed by Gwaltney of Smithfield and the Virginia Department of Corrections at the Sussex Maximum Security Prison No. 1.

She was a faithful member of Zion United Church of Christ, where she served as church treasurer and sang in the Mass Choir.

She is survived by her son, Christopher H. Clarke; friend and former husband, Haldone Clarke; seven siblings, Feliz Peterson, Barbara Martinez, Helena Ross, Cynthia McManus, Geneva Roberts, Clarice Johnson, and June Brown; brother-in-law, Fred Johnson; nieces and nephews, Alfred Jr., Daisy, Yvette, Richard, Felix Jr., Nelson, Veronica, Shawn, Tisha, Jerome, Fiona, Tiffane, Omorede, Betina, Kamaria, and Kitty; along with several other relatives by marriage, close family and beloved friends.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Zion United Church of Christ.
