TOKYO, July 14 (AP) – North Koreans today reached the Kum River east of Kongju despite heavy U.S. artillery fire and plane attacks, a frontline dispatch said.

An estimated 100 men reached the south bank of the Kum, last natural barrier before Taejon the South Korea provisional capital.

Reliable reports said the government was withdrawing to the south.

Taft opposes flat controls for president

WASHINGTON, July 14 (AP) – Any idea of giving President Truman standby authority to impose economic controls ran into flat opposition from Senator Taft (R-Ohio) today. Taft, who heads the Senate Republican Policy Committee, told a reporter he is willing to work with the administration in preparing a bill for congressional action, &uot;if controls become necessary because of the Korean war.

50 4-H members to attend camp

Fifty boys and girls of Nansemond 4-H clubs leave Suffolk Monday for five days of fun and club training at Camp Farrar, Virginia Beach.

Accompanying the youngsters will be Mrs. Lillian R. Livesay, home demonstration agent; John Freeman, county agent; Robert H. Bradford, assistant county agent; and several club leaders. These include Mrs. J. P. Brooks, Jr., Miss Margaret Harrell, Miss Otelia Westbrook and Mrs. Marshall Jones who will act as camp nurse. Nansemond County has contributed $983 to the building of Camp Farrar which operates for the 4-H children of southeastern Virginia, plus the Norfolk recreation department. Home demonstration clubs gave $305 and 4-H club, $173. The remainder came from parents of 4-H members, parent teacher associations and other individuals.

Magnolia women plan lawn party

The Magnolia Home Demonstration Club met Tuesday night at 8 o’clock in the home of Mrs. Wesley Philhower in Magnolia and Miss Lillie Pruden as co-hostess. The meeting was called to order by Mrs. Edward Gillette, president’ who presided. Mrs. Ray Hobbs led the devotionals. Mrs. Lyonel Grizzard was appointed reported for the Virginia Pilot. The treasurer, Mrs. Johnnie Bright, reported $44.84 was the balance in the treasure.

Rain falls for 10th straight day

A brief splattering of rain last night brought the consecutive string of rainy days to 10. From 9:30 p.m. until 10:30, a mere one inch fell, according to the Lake Kilby weather recorder.
