Weather has been deemed a culprit in a weekend accident involving a Suffolk police officer and another vehicle, resulting in minor injuries.

On Friday after 9 p.m., Officer Anthony Donaldson, 43, loss control of his 1997 Ford police cruiser after striking a large pool of standing water on Carolina Road during the rainstorm, said Suffolk Police Spokesman Mike Simpkins. Donaldson was responding to a call.

Donaldson was treated and released from Obici Hospital. No other injuries were reported.

An accident report released by police indicates that Donaldson was traveling south in the left lane on Carolina Road as William M. Brooks, 19, of the 700 block of Carolina Road, was traveling north in a 1997 Jeep Eagle.

When the officer approached the intersection of Forest Oak Lane where he came in contact with the water, the patrol car hydroplaned before hitting the left front corner of Brooks’ vehicle.

The jeep left the roadway, coming to rest on the sidewalk to the east of Carolina Road. The police car ended up in a grassy area against a chain link fence owned by Suffolk Station Apartments. Damage is estimated at $100.

Damage to the police care is reported as $2,000, and to the Jeep Eagle, $1,500.

The police report states that Donaldson’s speed prior to the accident is unknown, while the maximum safe speed is 45. Brooks was traveling 40 mph before the accident, according to the report.

Charges are pending.
