Two suspects accused of robbing Southern Food Store, 2109 N. Main St., at gunpoint on Thursday night are being held without bond in Western Tidewater Regional Jail.

Tyrone Maurice Hoggard, 27, of 1711 20th St., Chesapeake, and Dominic Gibson, 22, of 3107 Welcome Road, Chesapeake, led authorities on a car-and-foot-chase that ended outside a house in the North Fifth Street area of Suffolk.

According to police, when the two suspects went into the convenience store around 9:40 p.m., Hoggard attempted to make a purchase. As the clerk began to open the register, Hoggard pulled out a gun and demanded money.

When the first clerk ran into a back office, Hoggard pointed the gun to the second clerk and ordered him to open the register, police said. Hoggard then reached across the counter and grabbed the cash, fleeing in a gray Toyota Camry down North Main Street.

Police spotted the car and began a pursuit that ended in the area of North Fifth Street when the Toyota went into a ditch. After the accident, the suspects bailed from the car and fled the area on foot.

Police canvassed the neighborhood, eventually finding the suspects hiding in a shed behind a house in the 200 block of North Fourth Street.

Both men received minor injuries in the accident. They were treated and released from Obici Hospital and then taken to jail.

Hoggard was charged with armed robbery, use of firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Gibson was charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, eluding police (felony), suspended license, reckless driving and no seat belt. Both the weapon and the stolen money were recovered in the car.
