Harold A. Ruffin Jr.

Harold A. &uot;Billy&uot; Ruffin Jr., 49, of 2019 Airport Road, Suffolk, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, in Sentara Leigh Hospital. He was a native of Suffolk and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold A. (Buddy) Ruffin Sr.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Janice E. Ruffin; two sisters, Sandy Peele and Sheila Mayes, both of Suffolk; four brothers, William Ruffin of Raleigh, N.C.; Harold F. Ruffin and Duncan Ruffin, both of Suffolk, and Alfonsa Ruffin, and his wife, Becker, of Minnesota; three uncles, William Ruffin of Suffolk, George Ruffin of New York City, and James Eley and his wife, Betty, of Portsmouth; two aunts, Ruth E. Twine of Suffolk, and Hazel Walden of New York City; one great-uncle, John R. Riddick Sr. of Suffolk; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Mt. Ararat United Church of Christ by Bishop Daniel Boone. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Ruth E. Hayslett

Ruth E. Hayslett, 81, of 2509 Woodland Trail, Suffolk, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2002, in Obici Hospital.

A native of Nansemond County, she was a daughter of the late Lucy Brinkley Morris and Joe Morris. She was the widow of Clinton A. Hayslett, and was pre-deceased by her son, Clinton L. Hayslett.

She was a lifetime member of Balm of Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Mother’s Board, Senior Usher Board, Pastor’s Aide Committee, Missionary Board, and the Widower’s Club.

Survivors include three sons, J. Ralph Hayslett, Joe L. Haylett and Ed L. Hayslett, all of Suffolk; one devoted daughter and son-in-law, Pearlie H. Blanks and Albert L. Blanks of Suffolk; a sister, Dorothy Cofield of Suffolk; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Hayslett of Franklin; five grandsons, a devoted grandson, Marcus L. Blanks, Nitreal Hall and Tyron Long, all of Suffolk, Joe Hayslett (Teresa) of Newport News, and Eric Hayslett of Long Island, N.Y.; nine granddaughters, Tasha B. Benberry (Charon) of Germantown, Md., Deandria H. Cumberbatch (Lawrence) of Clinton, Md.; Renee Hayslett of Franklin, Pamela H. Warren (Earl) of Sedley, Angela H. Barham, Wendy H. Grant and Cindy H. Porter, all of Franklin, Robin Hayslett and Crystal Hayslett, both of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Marion Baker of Chesapeake, and Beulah Brown of Portsmouth; a devoted niece, Dora Hopson of Suffolk; a devoted nurse, Margaret Newby of Suffolk; as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral will be held at noon Thursday in Balm of Gilead Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at her daughter’s residence, 2509 Woodland Trail, Suffolk.
