Thomas Lee Ashe Jr., 70, of 1114 Custis Road, Suffolk, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, in Obici Hospital. A native of Nansemond County, he was the husband of Dorethya Ashe, and a son of the late Thomas Lee Ashe Sr. and Audrey Langston Ashe.

He had retired from the U.S. Postal service, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church, where he served on the Senior Usher Board, and was a member of the Men of Action. He was also a member of the Suffolk Boosters Club, and was vice president of the East Suffolk Gardens Civic League.

He is survived by his wife, Dorethya Ashe; one son, Malcolm Ashe of Suffolk; one daughter, Karen Perry of Chesapeake; three sisters, Evangeline Bynum of Suffolk, Mildred B. Ashe and Dorothy Brown, both of Norcross, Ga.; four brothers, Nathaniel Ashe of Yonkers, N.Y., Thaddeus Ashe, and his wife, Barbara, of Philadelphia, Pa., Allison Ashe of Suffolk, and Marvin Ashe, and his wife, Joyce, of Portsmouth; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Metropolitan Baptist Church by Dr. Robert Hobbs. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.

Rosa Slaughter

Ms. Rosa &uot;Lil’ Sis&uot; Slaughter, 48, of 1400 Sierra Dr., Suffolk, departed this life on Aug. 1, 2002, in Obici Hospital.

A native of Nansemond County, she was a daughter of Rosa Goodman, and the late Thomas Goodman.

She was predeceased by a brother, James Simmons, and grandmother, Mattie Mabry.

She had worked at QVC for 11 years. She was a member of New Paul’s Temple Holiness Church.

She is also survived by a son, Michael (Sharon) Slaughter; daughter, Michelle Slaughter, all of Suffolk; two grandchildren, Tierra Slaughter and Quanay Slaughter; four sisters, Deloise (Clarence) Slaughter, Janie (Eugene) Gates, Gail (Roy) Parker, all of Suffolk, and Lillian Bonds of Portsmouth; six brothers, George (Wilma) Simmons, Randolph Simmons, Lepolda Simmons, Thomas Simmons, Linwood Simmons, and Alvester Simmons, all of Suffolk; one aunt, Mae Moore of Norfolk and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends; and a devoted friend, Faye Parker.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5, in New Paul’s Temple Holiness Church by Pastor Catherine Skinner.

Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.

The body will be placed in the Church at 11:30 a.m.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mary E. Lewis

Mary Elizabeth Lewis, 52, of 620 Ashley Ave., Suffolk, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in Crocker Funeral Home. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Ernestine P. Sloane

Mrs. Ernestine &uot;Dolly&uot; Porter Sloane departed this life on Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She was a native of Suffolk, born on May 14, 1933, and a 1953 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt.

Left to cherish her memory of love, care and devotion are husband, Freddie Sloane; son, Michael Sloane of Brooklyn; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Claude Hall of Jamaica, N.Y.; uncle, Gilmore Trower Jr. of Suffolk, Va.; brother, Wilmer T. Porter of Hampton, Va.; sister, Dr. Ruth P. Holland of Hampton; five grandchildren, Nicholas Sloane, Christopher Hall, Corey Hall, and Cameron Hall, all of New York; cousin, Virginia Brown of Suffolk; nieces, nephews, and several cousins and friends.

Mrs. Sloane was preceded in death by her parents, Wilmer T. Porter and Virginia Trower Porter; her grandmother, Virginia B. Trower, and her aunt, Helen Trower Brown.

Visitation and condolences will be received at the home of Virginia Brown, 105 Bailey Circle, Suffolk.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Macedonia AME Church, Suffolk. Interment will follow at Carver Memorial Cemetery.

Nettie W. Wiggins

Mother Nettie W. Wiggins, 87, of 2525 E. Washington St., slipped into eternal rest on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, in Obici Hospital.

A native of Suffolk, she was a daughter of the late Johnny Wiggins and Virgie Flythe.

She attended Mary Estes School, and later moved to New York, and then relocated to Suffolk.

She was a member of St. Mary’s COGIC where she attended until her health failed.

Survivors include two sons, Walter Wiggins (Juanita) of Plainfield, N.Y., and Dr. Freddie Wiggins of Suffolk; two sisters, Addie Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa., and Elizabeth Wiggins of New York City; a brother, Willie Wiggins Sr. of New York City; three grandchildren, Shabar J. Witfield, Walter Lee Wiggins Jr. and Michael Wiggins; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The funeral will be held at noon Tuesday in St. Mary’s COGIC with Superintendent Dwight A. Nixon officiating. Burial will be in Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Viewing will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Monday in T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at other times at 201 Maple St. The family will assemble there at 11 a.m. Tuesday for the procession to the church.
