Take a bite out of crime

With the economy slowing and more and more people being put out of work, crime has been on the rise across the nation – this after years of decline.

Unfortunately, it’s a trend that’s likely to continue, as the present situation shows no sign of abating.

Now more than ever, it’s important for communities to lash out against crime. Area residents have an opportunity tonight to do just that as the National Night Out Against Crime is observed.

In Suffolk, civic leagues will be out in force staging gatherings to show unity and put forth the message that crime will not be tolerated in their neighborhoods.

While events such as those scheduled tonight certainly serve a valuable purpose as a rallying point and to build enthusiasm, in and of themselves, they do not deter crime. As in any endeavor, it’s commitment and follow-up to the goals expressed tonight that will be central to making Suffolk a safer place to live.

So while we encourage everyone to support tonight’s events, what’s important is to follow through on that commitment – be active in neighborhood watches, report suspicious activity, etc. – that will ultimately make the difference.
