Loss to Greensboro finishes SYAA in third

The Suffolk Super Colt team finished the Palomino Zone championships at 2-2 on Mon-day night in Greensboro, NC, ending the tournament with their second loss to Greensboro, 8-6. The Colts scored five consecutive runs in the fourth inning to come back from an 8-1 deficit, but it wasn’t quite enough to defeat the host team. SYAA finished the tournament in third place.

Holland Athletics announces signup dates

The Holland Athletic Association will have player registration for football and cheering at the ball fields in Holland on the following dates and times: From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 17 ; From 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 18; and from 8 to 10 a.m. on Aug. 24

Steelers Pop Warner signups Aug. 6-9

The Suffolk Steelers Pop Warner football and cheerleading teams will be holding registrations from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 6-9 at John. F. Kennedy Middle School. The league is currently seeking coaches for football and cheerleading. For more information, contact David Baker at 539-9407.

SYAA to hold fall ball signups Aug. 10

The Suffolk Youth Athletic Association (SYAA) will hold signups for fall baseball and softball from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 10 at Diamond Springs Park on Kings Fork Road. Liberty Golf Classic to be played Sept. 26

The Liberty Golf Classic will be held at the Nansemond River Golf Club on Sept. 26. The tournament, held to benefit the Gideons’ Society, will begin at noon. The cost is $75 per person, which includes a green fee, golf cart, driving range, snacks, drinks, and an open pit barbecue roast. Smithfield softball team to hold tryouts Sept. 14

A Smithfield select softball team for girls age 10 and under is being formed. Tryouts will be held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 7-8 at Nike Park for all positions except pitcher and catchers. Pitchers and catchers tryout will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at Nike Park. Tournament team selection will be made by Sept. 17.

Deadline for signing up for a free tryout is Aug. 30.
