An apartment fire has left a mother and three children without a place to live.

Suffolk Firefighters were summoned to Cypress Manor Apartments when a fire was reported at about 1:30 Friday afternoon.

Fire Captain James T. Judkins Jr. said investigators for the Fire Department believe the blaze started in a child’s bed at the apartment complex.

&uot;Firefighters responded to the Stacey Drive apartment where they found light smoke at the front door and an upstairs window,&uot; said Judkins. &uot;As they advanced up the stairs, they located the fire in one of three bedrooms.&uot;

The captain said the fire was contained to the children’s bedroom, but other rooms in the apartment sustained heat, water and smoke damage. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, however, investigators have ruled out the possibility of the blaze resulting from electrical problems.

Battalion Chief William Nichols said he estimates damages to the apartment at $20,000 and the occupants lost $5,000 in contents.

The 10-unit structure is owned by Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority and is valued at $300,000.

The victims of the fire, Katrina Robinson and her three children, ages 2 to 7-years old, are receiving services, including shelter, from the Suffolk Chapter of the American Red Cross.
