His team may have defeated Landcastle Farms 20-13 in both team’s Parks and Recreation Department season opener at Wellon’s Park Tuesday evening. But Willie &uot;Cat&uot; Turner saw much bigger things in store for Winning Edge.

&uot;We play 18 games, and I predict that we’ll do 16-2,&uot; said Turner. &uot;We might not come out here every week to play. I’m not bragging or bigheaded, but the players on this team have been together for years.&uot;

The Edge got off to a smashing start in Tuesday’s games, as they jumped out to a 13-0 third-inning lead when Ken Davis and Marvis Mayfield scored three runs apiece and Turner and Ronald Cargille each crossing the plate twice. But the Farm offense finally started showing life in the top of the fourth, as Kevin Jewett and Mike Mayo singled with one out. Will Albert hammered a triple down the right field line to score both runners, and Mikey Chin brought Albert home with a sacrifice fly.

James Brown batted in Dennis Hobbs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 14-3, but Scott Bradshaw doubled to centerfield, bringing home Nick Gattison and Grant Goessel to knock it back down to 14-5.

Undaunted, Cargille bashed an inside-the-park home run into right field to start off the fifth for the Edge, but it would be the only run his team would get. When Darrel Ricks and Jewett flew out to open the sixth inning, it appeared that the Edge would have a comfortable amount of breathing room.

Mayo, however, thought otherwise. He, Albert and Chin singled to load the bases, and Ryan Drake knocked a clean shot into centerfield to score Mayo and Albert. After the runners advanced on an error, Gattison slammed a double to centerfield to bring Drake all the way around, bringing the Farm to within 15-8. Goessel drove in both runners with a single of his own, and the Farm seemed to have the momentum.

They didn’t keep it for long. With one out in the sixth, Terry Sherrod beat out an infield grounder, and Ken Avery hit a ground rule double under the left field fence. A Hobbs single scored both runners, and Mike Green brought Hobbs in with a single to left field. After an error by the Farm allowed Cargille to reach base for the fourth time of the evening, both runners scored, and the lead was a safe 20-10. Mike Ward, Scott Bradshaw and Mayo scored in the top of the seventh, but the Edge held them off for the win.

&uot;I feel good!&uot; said Brown, who spent the game on the mound. &uot;Of course, I was a little scared when they started coming back, but I just had to stay focused and keep throwing strikes. That’s hard to do when they’re rallying, but we just kept scoring when we were at bat.&uot;

Batting was the team’s biggest asset, according to Turner. &uot;We knew we had it after we scored all those runs in the first few innings,&uot; he said. &uot;We had to play a little defense when they were scoring, but we just had to hurry up and get back to hitting.&uot;
