State must redistrict both houses

ALEXANDRIA (AP) – Virginia was ordered Friday in federal court to reapportion both houses of the General Assembly before the end of the year and to hold a special election for state senators before January 1966.

A special three-judge federal court ruled unanimously that the legislature must convene in special session by Dec. 15 to redistrict itself.

The courts opinion in effect cuts the four-year terms of state senators to two years until 1968. Th 40 state senators were elected in 1963 to terms due to expire in January 1968.

Pupil to be charged with 2 Holland fires

An investigation into two fires that occurred at Holland High School within a 10-day period earlier this month has apparently borne fruit. A formal charge is expected to be filed in connection with the fires on Monday, according to Nansemond County Deputy Sheriff Paul Massey.

Massey, who has been assisting Sheriff James C. Knight Jr. with the investigation, told the News-Herald Tuesday night that a juvenile petition would be filed against a 15-year-old student who attends the school in connect with the fires, the first of which caused several thousand dollars worth of damage to the building.

Massey said exhaustive questioning of students, teachers and the school principal by the deputy state fire marshals and Nansemond County Fire Chief Frank Gayle has resulted in an accumulation of rather strong evidence against the juvenile.

Salvation Army Corps has new head officer

Suffolk’s Salvation Army Corps has a new commanding officer. She is Maj. Mary McVicker, who will replace Capt. and Mrs. H.L. Moore Jr. Major McVicker is a native of Fairmont, W. Va., and attended school there.

Maj. McVicker is a native of 27 years with the Salvation Army. She previously assisted with the corps’ program in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Carey Copeland is recognized

Carey T. Copeland of Whaleyville has recently been recognized as one of the top men of the Farm Bureau Insurance Companies. In receiving this award, Copeland was cited for outstanding accomplishments in services to his clients and the sale of new business. This was announced yesterday buy Milton Cheatum, district sales manager.

For his outstanding service during the past months, Copeland and his wife, Nancy, have just attended the company’s &uot;All-Star&uot; convention at the Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach.

East Suffolk’s stature grows after latest win

This was East Suffolk Coach Mack Benn talking about his football team after whipping Peabody High of Petersburg Friday night, 23-9. Benn said his Wolverines finally jelled in the second half and started to block and tackle like a real football team.
