Joseph R. Spivey

Joseph Roberts Spivey, 77, of North Street, Smithfield, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at his residence.

He was a native of Suffolk, and had retired from Bayer Pharmaceutical Company as a representative. He graduated from Elon University in 1952 with a B.S. degree, where he was a member of Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities.

Mr. Spivey was a member of Smithfield Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and Sunday School teacher of the Youth Class; a member of Duck’s Unlimited; a former member of Junior and Senior German clubs; the Cedar Point Country Club in Suffolk; and an avid supporter of Boy Scouts of America.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran and served as a pilot during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Everett Spivey; daughter, Carol Spivey Bell, and son, Ronald Atwood Spivey, and his wif,e Patricia Finley Spively, all of Smithfield; sister, Linda Spivey Pruett of Van Nuys, Calif.; brother, Robert Atwood Spivey, and his wife, Martha Crocker Spivey, of Tallahassee, Fla.; aunt, Elizabeth Roberts Plumley of Newport News; and two granddaughters, Meredith Spivey and Amanda Spivey.

The memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in Smithfield Baptist Church with Dr. Donald R. Rhoton and Dr. Robert A. Spivey officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk.

The family will receive friends at the residence.
