Bennie L. Guess Sr.

Bennie L. Guess Sr., 56, of 403 Pleasant St., died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, in Obici Hospital.

A native of Nansemond County, he was a son of the late Benn Guess and Corine Singletary-Guess.

He was a member of New First Baptist Church and its Usher Board, and had retired from the Newport News Shipyard.

He is survived by two sons, Bennie L. Guess Jr. of Richmond, and Travis Guess of Rochester, N.Y.; one daughter, Tammro Guess Williams of Portsmouth; two brothers, Joseph Guess and James Guess, both of Suffolk; four grandchildren; an aunt, Charlotte Brodie of Baltimore, Md.; two uncles, Marcus Singletary of Florida, and Leon Guess of Chicago, Ill.; and a devoted friend, Rosa White; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in New First Baptist Church by the Rev. Lemuel Greene. Interment will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Jesse C. Marshburn

Mr. Jesse Clarence Marshburn Sr., 81, of 419 Butler Dr., died Monday, Sept. 30, at Southwood Nursing and Retirement Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Ronald Cava and Rev. Aubrey Quakenbush officiating. Interment will follow in Clinton City Cemetery.

Mr. Marshburn, a native of Sampson Co., was the son of the late David Cleveland and Martha Edwards Marshburn. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a retired automobile dealer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Godbold Marshburn, two sisters, Alyce Marshburn McGrath and Edna Marshburn McLamb; and a brother, Harold Marshburn.

Surviving are a son, Jesse Marshburn Jr. and his wife, Vonnie, of Clinton, N.C.; a daughter, Frankie Ostroff and her husband, Ed, of Suffolk; a sister, Mrs. Laurene Keltner of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a brother, Lawrence Marshburn of Fayetteville, N.C.; a granddaughter, Laura Ashley Marshburn of Clinton, N.C.; four grandsons, Jesse Marshburn III and Michel Marshburn, both of Clinton, N.C.; David Ostroff of Savannah, Ga. and Ethan Ostroff of Memphis, Tenn.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home and other times at 503 Coharic Dr., Clinton, N.C.
